(May 17) Emory University's Alex Jacobs
finished the season with a perfect 17-0 record at No. 3 singles.
The last two came in the NCAA national team championship as Jacobs
helped Emory finish third. In the quarterfinals, Jacobs was a 6-1,
6-1 winner against his opponent from Washington (Mo.). His singles
match in the semifinals was stopped because of decision. In the
third-place match, Jacobs recorded a 6-4, 6-2 singles win as Emory
came from behind for a 4-3 victory. Jacobs and teammate Mark Odgers
won both matches in the team championship, picked up the No. 1 seed
for the doubles championship, advanced to the doubles quarterfinals
before being eliminated, and finished with a 15-5 record. Jacobs
becomes an All-American for the third consecutive year.
(May 3) Jesse Ferlianto helped Emory University
advance to the quarterfinals of the NCAA national championship.
Ferlianto won his singles and doubles match in the sub-regional
finals as No. 1 ranked Emory defeated No. 10 Washington & Lee
(Va.), 5-2. With the match in the balance, Emory leading 3-2, and
moved indoors, Ferlianto stepped onto the court for his No. 6 singles
match. He came away with a double bagel, winning 6-0, 6-0. Earlier
in the match, he and doubles partner Patrick Redmond prevailed 9-7
at No. 3 doubles to clinch the doubles point for Emory. For the
season, Ferlianto has a 21-1 singles record, including 8-0 against
top 25 teams in Division III. He and Redmond are 19-1 in doubles.
(April 26) Emory University junior Alex
Jacobs led the Eagles to their 15th consecutive University Athletic
Association (UAA) title. Jacobs won all three of his singles matches
and two doubles matches. In his first singles match, Jacobs faced
an opponent from Brandeis University and won 6-4, 7-6. The second
match featured Jacobs versus an opponent from Carnegie Mellon University
with Jacobs winning 6-1, 6-1. In his third match of the tournament,
Jacobs defeated an opponent from Washington University 6-2, 6-4.
Jacobs improves his win/loss record to 16-2 on the season. In doubles,
Jacobs partnered with Mark Odgers to earn wins against Carnegie
Mellon (8-0) and Washington (8-5). Jacobs and Odgers are currently
ranked second in the nation for NCAA Division III doubles players
by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
(April 19) Emory University junior Mark
Odgers improved his singles season win/loss record to 10-7 with
a win over Washington & Lee University (VA). Odgers, who is
currently ranked fifth in the nation for NCAA Division III players
by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), defeated his opponent,
who is ranked 21st, by a score of 6-0, 6-4. In doubles, Odgers and
partner Alex Jacobs earned a win with an 8-3 score; the ITA currently
ranks the pair second in the nation. As a team, Emory defeated Washington
and Lee by a score of 7-0 and moved to 17-1 on the season.
(April 12) Emory University junior Tyson
Ramsay led the Eagles to a 6-1 victory over Washington College (MD).
Ramsay, who has only played in the No. 1 singles spot a few times
during his career, did so over the weekend and it led to an upset.
Ramsay is ranked ninth in the nation for NCAA Division III schools
by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) took on the third
ranked player in the nation, Peter Taylor, and won 7-5, 5-7, 7-5.
In doubles, Ramsay and Josh Rubens partnered together to play in
the No. 1 position and upset their opponents, who are ranked in
the top-twenty by the ITA, win with a score of 8-3.
(March 29) Emory University sophomore Jesse
Ferlianto helped the Eagles defeat Averett College (VA) by a score
of 7-0. Playing the No. 6 position in singles, Ferlianto defeated
his opponent in straight sets: 6-0, 6-0 and improved his season
win/loss record to 14-1. In doubles, Ferlianto partnered with Patrick
Redmond to earn a win of 8-4 over their opponents. The duo has a
win/loss record of 12-1 on the season. The Eagles are the defending
NCAA Division III national team champions.
(March 22) Emory sophomore Patrick Redmond
improved his singles win/loss record 14-4 with a win against DePauw
University (IN) over the weekend. Redmond defeated his opponent
in three sets: 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. In singles, he is currently ranked
No. 16 in the nation for NCAA Division III schools by the Intercollegiate
Tennis Association (ITA). In doubles, Redmond teamed with Jesse
Ferlianto where the duo defeated their opponents 8-3 and also improved
their season win/loss record to 9-1. The Eagles, who are ranked
No. 1 in the nation, defeated DePauw, who is ranked No. 22, by a
score of 6-0.
(March 15) Junior Tyson Ramsay earned straight-set
wins in singles over opponents from Florida Southern College, U.
of Indianapolis, and Eckerd College (FL). He is currently ranked
ninth in the nation in singles by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association
(ITA). In doubles, Ramsay partnered with Josh Rubens and the pair
added improved their season win/loss record to 6-1 with three victories.
The Eagles are the defending NCAA Division III national team champions
and they improved their season win/loss record to 8-1.
(March 1) Junior Alex Jacobs helped Emory
University capture its first Intercollegiate Tennis Association
(ITA) Division III national indoor team championship. Jacobs went
6-0 on the weekend in singles and doubles with wins over three NCAA
Division III schools (MIT-16th; Trinity [TX] - 6th; and Gustavus
Adolphus -3rd). In the championship match, playing No. 3 singles,
Jacobs defeated an opponent from Gustavus in straight sets, 6-2,
7-6. Jacobs partnered with Mark Odgers in doubles to defeat their
opponents, ranked fourth in the nation, 8-4. Jacobs and Odgers are
ranked No. 2 in the nation by the ITA. Jacobs improves his win/loss
record to 5-1 in both singles and doubles on the season. The Eagles
are the defending NCAA Division III national team champion and currently
ranked No. 1 in the nation by the ITA.
(Feb. 23) Junior Alex Jacobs played a role
in Emory's defeat of Rhodes College (TN) and University of the South
(TN). In singles, Odgers defeated an opponent from Rhodes College,
6-3, 6-1, as well as an opponent from U. of the South, 6-7 (8-6),
6-4, 7-5. In doubles, Jacobs teamed with fellow junior, Mark Odgers
to earn wins against Rhodes opponents, 8-4, and U. of the South
opponents, 8-6. The doubles pair of Jacobs and Odgers are ranked
No. 2 in the nation for NCAA Division III schools by the Intercollegiate
Tennis Association (ITA). Emory is the defending NCAA Division III
national team champion and have started the season with a win-loss
record of 2-1.
(Oct. 20) The Emory University doubles
team of Mark Odgers and Jesse Ferlianto finished second at the Intercollegiate
Tennis Association (ITA) national championship. Odgers and Ferlianto,
who were the No. 1 seed lost to a duo from Trinity University (Texas),
7-5, 6-4 in the finals. Odgers and Ferlianto earlier won the ITA
doubles regional title. This is the first season that Odgers and
Ferlianto have been paired together in doubles. For Odgers, this
is his third appearance at the ITA doubles nationals and second
consecutive year that he has finished second.
(Oct. 6) Emory University sophomore Patrick
Redmond became just the sixth Eagle ever to win the singles title
at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Championships.
Redmond, who was unseeded in the 64-player field, defeated the fourth
and fifth seeds. In the finals, he beat teammate Josh Rubens, 6-3,
1-6, 6-3, for the title. Redmond now moves on to the ITA nationals
October 16-19 in Corpus Christi, Texas. In doubles, Redmond teamed
up with Yoji Masuoka to advance to the quarterfinals after defeating
the fourth seed. Redmond came into the 2003-04 season with a 2-1
career singles record and an 0-1 doubles record.
