(May 24) Mary Ellen Gordon of Emory University
closed her career as the most decorated player in NCAA Division
III women's tennis history. Gordon won the NCAA singles and doubles
championships and helped Emory to the NCAA team title. The three
NCAA championships increased her career total to eight, a new national
record. Only two men's players in NCAA history have won eight championships.
Gordon became the first NCAA athlete, male or female, in any division,
to win the national doubles crown all four years. She repeated as
singles champion. Gordon dropped only one set in 17 singles and
doubles matches in this year's NCAA team and individual championships.
She was honored as the national Senior Player of the Year by the
Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
(May 17) Carina Alberelli of Emory University
not only became an All-American for the first time in her career,
she also became the sixth Eagle ever to earn All-America honors
in both singles and doubles in the same year. The junior advanced
to the quarterfinals of the NCAA national singles championships.
Then Alberelli and teammate Margaret Moscato reached the semifinals
of the NCAA national doubles championship. Both accomplishments
followed Alberelli's contributions to Emory's second consecutive
national team championship. At the championship banquet, Alberelli
was recognized as the national winner of the "Player to Watch"
award from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, presented to
a player who has a breakthrough season and is projected to continue
performing at that level the rest of their career.
