(May 23, 2005) Mark Odgers of Emory
University was named the national Senior Player of the Year
by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Earlier this month,
he was honored as the regional winner. Last week, Odgers helped
Emory to its fourth consecutive appearance in the NCAA national
semifinals. The Eagles finished third after losing to the
eventual national champion. Odgers is the first Emory player
ever to win this national award. He had a 17-5 record in singles
this season and 22-6 in doubles. Odgers was the No. 1 seed
in the NCAA singles championship and part of the No. 2 seed
in the NCAA doubles championship. He became the first Emory
player to earn All-America honors all four years in both singles
and doubles. He was ranked 17th in the nation among Division
III singles players and fifth among doubles pairings with
teammate Alex Jacobs. Odgers is first in school history for
most career doubles wins and second in career doubles win
percentage. He is 10th all-time at Emory for career singles
wins and 20th for career singles win percentage.
(May 9, 2005) Patrick Redmond won
both of his matches to help Emory University advance to the
quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III national tournament.
In a matchup of the top two ranked teams in the region, Redmond
won his singles and doubles matches as Emory came away with
a 4-0 win against Washington & Lee (Va.). Redmond, ranked
No. 44 in the nation in Division III singles, was a winner
at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 6-2. He teamed up with Jesse Ferlianto
for an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles. Redmond has a career singles
record of 42-14. He earned All-America honors last season
after winning the ITA regional singles championship.
(April 25, 2005) Emory University
freshman Hardy Ehlers earned wins in both doubles and singles
matches to help the Eagles, ranked second in the nation, defeat
Piedmont College (Ga.). Playing in the No. 5 position, Ehlers
won 6-2, 6-3 in his second singles dual-match of the season.
In the No. 3 doubles match, Ehlers and teammate Mark Odgers
won 8-1. Ehlers is 5-1 in singles matches this season with
his only loss coming in tournament play to an Emory teammate.
(April 18, 2005) Emory University
junior Jesse Ferlianto won all six of his singles and doubles
matches last weekend to help the Eagles capture their 16th
consecutive University Athletic Association championship.
Ferlianto did not drop a set in his three singles matches,
playing in the No. 5 position, to give him a streak of 11
consecutive wins. He has not lost a singles match since February
26 and has dropped only one set in that time. Ferlianto and
partner Patrick Redmond won all three of their doubles matches
improving to 11-4 as a pair this season.
(April 11, 2005) Emory University
junior Patrick Redmond won both of his singles matches last
weekend including the deciding match in Emory's victory over
the No. 4 team in the nation. Redmond, ranked No. 34 in the
nation, defeated the No. 19 player in the nation to help the
Eagles defeat UC Santa Cruz. With the team's NCAA Division
III undefeated streak on the line, Redmond battled to a third
set tiebreaker eventually winning, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(5), to clinch
the win for the Eagles. Redmond also defeated an opponent
from the University of San Francisco, a Division I team, 6-1,
7-5, helping the Eagles to a 5-2 win.
(March 28, 2005) Emory University
senior Alex Jacobs won all of his matches last weekend, including
a doubles match against the No. 1 ranked pair in the nation,
to help lead the Eagles to two wins over nationally ranked
teams. Playing in the No. 1 doubles position, Jacobs and partner
Mark Odgers, the No. 5 ranked pair in the nation, defeated
the nation's top ranked doubles pair, 8-4, in a match against
Kalamazoo College (Mich.). Jacobs won in the third singles
position, 6-4, 6-1, helping Emory to a 5-2 win against Kalamazoo,
the No. 16 ranked team in the nation. The next day, Odgers
and Jacobs topped a doubles pair from DePauw University (Ind.),
8-4. Jacobs won his singles match, 6-7 (8), 6-4, 7-5, as the
Eagles defeated the No. 21 team in the nation, 6-1. Jacobs
is undefeated in dual singles matches this season with a 6-0
record. His career singles winning percentage of .851 (63-11)
is on pace to beat the previous record of .792. He has already
been named a doubles All-American for the fourth season in
a row as an Intercollegiate Tennis Association regional doubles
champion.
(March 21, 2005) Mark Odgers won
a singles match and two doubles matches helping Emory University
win all three of its matches last week in Hawaii, all against
ranked NCAA Division II and III teams. Odgers defeated the
No. 31 player in the nation in Division III, 6-1, 6-2, in
the first singles position helping Emory to a 6-1 over Bowdoin
College, ranked No. 14 in the nation. In the same match, he
and partner Alex Jacobs won their doubles match defeating
the 19th ranked pair in the nation, 8-2. Odgers and Jacobs,
who are ranked No. 5 nationally in Divison III, also won 8-4
against a pair from University of Hawaii in Hilo, the 29th
ranked team in Division II. Odgers' only loss of the week
came in the No. 1 singles match against the No. 10 ranked
player nationally in Division II. Odgers won the second set
and lost the third in a tiebreak, 2-6, 6-3, 6-7 (4), against
his opponent from Hawaii Pacific University, the No. 32 ranked
team in Division II. Odgers is ranked No. 17 in the nation
in Division III singles and has already earned All-America
status this season as an Intercollegiate Tennis Association
regional doubles champion.
(March 14, 2005) Emory University's
Josh Rubens won both of his matches against the No. 18 ranked
team in the nation. Rubens was a 6-0, 6-2 winner at No. 6
singles and an 8-4 winner at No. 2 doubles along with teammate
Tyson Ramsay. He helped Emory, ranked No. 3 in the nation,
defeat Washington (Md.), 7-0. This was Rubens's fourth consecutive
singles win against a national top-20 team. In those four
matches, he did not drop a set, nor did he lose more than
two games in any of those sets. For the season, he has a 9-3
record in singles and a 9-4 record in doubles. Rubens is ranked
44th in the nation in singles and 11th in the region.
(Feb. 28, 2005) Senior Mark Odgers
won all three of his singles matches, including one against
the top ranked player in the nation, to help Emory University
capture its second straight Intercollegiate Tennis Association
(ITA) Indoor National Championship. Playing in the No. 2 singles
position after missing the previous week's matches due to
sickness, Odgers lost only seven games in singles play with
all three opponents coming from teams ranked in the top 10
nationally in NCAA Division III. Odgers, who is ranked No.
17 in the nation, won 6-0, 6-1, and 6-2, 6-2, in the quarterfinals
and semifinals, respectively. In the finals, the Eagles, ranked
No. 3 in the nation, faced California-Santa Cruz, ranked No.
4 in the nation, with Odgers paired against the No. 1 player
in the nation, Kevin Casey. Odgers defeated Casey dropping
only two games, 6-1, 6-1. Odgers and his doubles partner Alex
Jacobs, the fifth ranked pair in the nation, won two out of
three matches. Odgers and Jacobs defeated a pair from Gustavus
Adolphus (Minn.), the No. 3 ranked duo in the nation, 8-2,
and beat a duo from Santa Cruz, 8-6, in the finals.
(Oct.18, 2004) Emory University sophomore
Yoji Masuoka finished in third place in the singles draw at
the ITA national championship defeating a nationally ranked
player. After a win in the quaterfinals Masuoka fell in the
semifinals to the eventual champion. In the third-place match
against a player ranked No. 32 in the nation at the end of
last season, Masuoka won a close match 5-7, 6-2, 7-6 prevailing
in the third set tiebreaker 9-7. Masuoka qualified for the
national championship by winning the ITA regional championship.
As a regional champion Masuoka is ensured All-American status.
(Sept. 27, 2004) Yoji Masuoka lost
only two sets in six matches en route to winning the singles
draw of Intercollegiate Tennis Association regional championship.
Despite entering the tournament unseeded, Masuoka beat the
second, third, fourth and sixth seeded players on the way
to the championship. Masuoka and partner Patrick Redmond reached
the semi-final in the doubles draw before losing to the top-seeded
pair and eventual champion. Masuoka reached the singles semi-finals
of the same tournament last year and was 10-1 in singles matches
last season, playing mostly in the No. 5 or 6 position. His
win assures Masuoka All-American status for this year and
earns him a spot in the ITA National Small College Tennis
Championships Oct. 14-17 in Fort Myers, Fla.
