I would like to start my very first diary
entry with a simple fact of life: There is something inherently
funny about farting. Contrary to coach's opinion, it will always
be humorous when a person can make an entire van stink.
As for the golf, well, we traveled back
up I-85 again to Greensboro this week for the Greensboro College
Invitational. And just when I thought I had seen every back road
in North Carolina, we managed to get lost again in the tobacco fields
of the South.
We eventually arrived at Meadowlands GC,
a scenic and challenging Hale Irwin designed golf course. Although
the tournament proved to be very promising for the newcomers, a
few of us struggled to post a good score.
Senior Brian Nixon jumped back in the lineup
to help the team with two great rounds of 71. His score of 142 was
good enough for a fifth-place finish, two shots out of the lead.
Also competing in his first tournament of the year was sophomore
Tristan Sanders. Tristan played two solid rounds of golf to represent
Emory as an individual in the tournament with a score of 148.
Unfortunately, the rest of us had a tough
time scoring on a course that we knew could be taken advantage of.
Scherr, who shot 73-75 this week, finally agreed that he must have
used up all of his birdies in the practice round. Also helping the
team was Tim Hamm, whose usual scrappiness helped him hang in there
for two solid rounds and a top-25 finish at 149. As for Chris Clarke
and I, well, let's just say it was a long couple of days.
Next week we head off to Surfside Beach,
South Carolina, to compete in the prestigious Wilson Gordin Collegiate
Classic with many of the best teams in D III golf. Hopefully we
can knock off a couple of the top-ranked teams and improve our chances
at another invite to the NCAA national championships.
Mike Lebow is a sophomore from Royersford,
Pa. He would love to answer e-mail
questions from Emory recruits and fans.
