Our season ended sooner than we wanted,
but looking back, it was a very successful year. We got third place
in the regional tournament. Given that we lost our two top hitters
last weekend and had an outfielder playing first base, I think that's
a pretty respectable finish.
The weekend began with the ever-lovely
bus ride up to Salem, Virginia, the hub of all that is rainy and
dreary. Wanda, our bus driver, got us into Salem early, so we had
a chance to walk around the city streets and check out some raging
80's outfits.
Then we went to Moyer Complex for our last
practice, where Jen broke her wrist sliding into second base. What
a way to start off the weekend! She handled it well, though, and
all the parents were very supportive of her. Some of the girls went
to the dollar store and got her a megaphone so she could continue
to tell us what a great day it is for softball.
One of our great adventures involved the
entire team (19 people) getting stuck in the elevator. It turns
out they really do test out the elevator for weight limits. And
it also turns out our team collectively weighs more than 2,500 pounds.
Just about the time that three girls were hyperventilating from
claustrophobia, the doors opened spontaneously on the fourth floor.
Needless to say, almost everyone took the stairs the rest of the
way up.
Our most memorable game was against Sewanee,
who seems hellbent on beating us one of these days. When we played
them in the beginning of the season, we beat them 5-0 and 2-0, respectively.
Last weekend, our first game against them
we beat them 1-0, and our second game was 1-0... in 14 innings.
I have to admit I'm glad we won't play them again for a while. Nicole
pitched and Ali caught the entire game, and Mary continued to be
a hitting machine, getting on base a lot and giving us chances to
score. Sarah eventually hit her in for the winning run. The game
ran 3 and 1/2 hours, and some of us were just a bit sore after.
Also, we got to see a lot of people "bust
a move" this weekend. The award for best moves goes to Coach,
who I gave an 8 for presentation and a 10 for style. We all jammed
out to a lot of Al Green and Michael Jackson's "Thriller"
CD. "Beat It" became a team favorite, and got us pumped
up for the games.
Macado's (one of the local restaurants)
was very nice to let us come party it up after the tournament to
celebrate Mother's Day and Nicole's graduation. It was a bittersweet
dinner, with lots of hugs and goodbyes. Only six girls went home
on the bus, but we had a great time watching movies and resting
our aching muscles.
I would love to write more, but my computer
is about to die and summer is just beginning, which means I'm out
of here! Look for the fabulous diary entries to return next spring,
when we make another run to finish our "unfinished business."
