While many Emory students were packing
their bags last week, getting ready to head home for Thanksgiving,
the women's basketball team was prepared for a week filled with
long bus rides, lots of team dinners and even more basketball.
Tuesday night we had our first home game
against Wesleyan in which despite the loss of five players (four
fouled out and I got sent to the ER for a "head injury")
we added another win to our tally. Having stands filled with friends
and family helped boost the enthusiasm of the team throughout the
whole game. However, I think the crowd was mostly filled with kids
from me and Ashley's dorm seeing as we did a ridiculous amount of
recruiting for "superfans". Thanks guys!
Then Wedesday night after practice, we
ate one of the many Thanksgiving dinners that were cooked for us.
My mom and brother were in town, so it was great to see them again,
seeing as I haven't seen my little brother since August! We took
it easy that night and looked forward to Thanksgiving day.
Thanksgiving day we had an amazing home-cooked
dinner thanks to the Byron family. I think everyone ate themselves
sick, especially Kelly who even passed out due to all the wonderful
food. After dinner, the team played a very competitive game of Catch
Phrase which tired us out to the point that everyone went home and
got some sleep for the eight-hour bus ride to Kentucky the next
day.
Friday we woke up, had practice then grabbed
our bags and lunch and headed off to Kentucky. The bus ride consisted
of studying, lots of sleeping and lots of movies. There was also
the occasional riveting game of Catch Phrase.
When we arrived I know I was especially
elated to see that snow was starting to fall because I have never
seen snow in Texas during the holidays!! I tried to recruit my teammates
to come outside with me to catch falling snowflakes, but seeing
as most of the team is from up north, they weren't as excited as
me.
However, Alex and Sprague, the two brave
souls, ventured into the "blizzard" to catch snowflakes
and take pictures with the official team camera. We then retired
to our rooms and my two roommates (Sprague and Mommy Sue) fought
the ongoing battle with the room's temperature control until we
fell asleep.
The next day was GAME DAY! We played Westminster
in the first round of the tournament. In a hard-fought battle on
the court, we just couldn't pull out the win. However, we put that
loss behind us and focused on winning the next game against Centre.
That night we traveled to Ohio to eat dinner
at Steph's house. The house was filled with everyone's families,
seeing as many of the players are originally from around that area.
The food was delicious and we spent some quality time with each
other after stuffing our faces full of Olive Garden food.
We then headed back to the hotel and got
some shuteye so we could be pumped up for the next game against
Centre. For most of the game it was pretty neck and neck.
In the last minute we had a huge plays
by seniors Beth Byron, who nailed a three, Steph, who dominated
the offensive boards, and Susan Lippert, who hit two free throws
and made a steal that sealed the game. The girls fought hard and
desereved that win while me and Bergie (injury reserve) did our
best to pump them up from the bench.
Sadly enough, it was time to pack our things
and head home to Atlanta. The ride home was long and consisted of
(once again) action packed games of Catch Phrase which my team of
baby Beth, Lynn and Lauren dominated!! (twice!!). We were all happy
once we got back to the WPEC and got ready for Monday's classes
and our next game on Wednesday against Oglethorpe. Go Eagles!!!

questions from Emory recruits and fans.
