Although winning is not the most important
aspect of athletics, it sure feels nice. On opening day at the University
of the South (Tenn.), we experienced our first victory of the season.
Freshmen and upperclassmen alike glowed from the pride of accomplishment,
and stories of elation accompanied our post-race lunch and van ride
back to Atlanta.
The victory not only made us happy about
our team's power, but it gave us a glimpse of the way our season
can turn out. With a great group of veterans and some outstanding
newcomers, we have the potential to accomplish great things. We
are hungry for team recognition at the highest level, at the national
meet in November.
During the next two months, we have made
big plans for our team. Achieving our goals will require teamwork
in the form of individual dedication and in the form of motivation
and support toward each other. As time passes, my confidence rises
in our ability to fulfill these requirements. Each day, our team
becomes more fluid: we each contribute something unique to the team
dynamic, but our movements and motivations meld together under a
common purpose.
Every day at practice we must decide
if we want to continue on this path toward victory. We have the
choice between becoming a good team or becoming an excellent team.
So far we have chosen excellence. Watch out because we plan to keep
that choice. Go Eagles!
