March 7, 2005
After a tough, yet much needed week
of practice that included freezing temperatures, 25-mph winds,
and the running of stadiums in the hot, humid aquatic center,
we were chomping at the bit to play a few games.
Due to a miscommunication on scheduling,
the games on Friday were played at home instead of at Wesleyan
(Ga.). We very much enjoyed our weekend home, and the team's
performance definitely proved it.
We opened up the first game on Friday with a 9-0 rout of Wesleyan.
Freshman Ashley Tobar pitched a stellar game allowing only
three hits through the shortened five-inning game.
Her performance on the mound was
backed by another strong showing by the defense, and even
stronger showing by the offense lineup at the plate. The entire
team was in on the action, but the game was highlighted by
two monsters homeruns by the sisters of slam: Jennifer Harrigan
and Sarah Morse.
In the second game, we played well again but couldn't seem
to push as many runs across the plate. However Harrigan added
excitement again with another homer over the left-field fence
(Keep it up Jen!). Freshman Kathy Gordon took the mound in
game two and finished with another solid performance.
On Saturday, we faced a tough team
in Ferrum College (Va.). Going into the games, we knew that
it would be the toughest competition we had faced so far this
year, but of course, we did not let that scare us.
In game one, we came out firing on
all cylinders, finishing with another shutout 9-0 and another
win for Kathy Gordon. It took us a little longer to get going
in game two.
After falling behind 2-0, we rallied in fourth to a 4-2 lead.
In the end, we added another victory with final score of 7-3.
This game was highlighted by an awesome
performance by Tobar. It was definitely her strongest showing
of the year and is only a hint of things to come from this
freshman.
Overall, the weekend went extremely well. We really seem to
be coming together as a team and it is showing on the field.
The wins against Ferrum were huge for us, and provide the
perfect stepping stone on our way to regaining the UAA Championship
this week in Altamonte Springs, Florida.
P.S. Special thanks to all of our
supportive parents and to Mrs. Eaves for the yummy deviled
eggs! Look forward to seeing everyone in Florida.
