October 25, 2004
The last two weeks have been a turning
point in our season. We overcame some internal struggles and
came together to beat our one of our conference rivals, NYU.
With that victory still fresh in our minds, we came back from
Chicago ready to prepare for the Emory National Invitational.
The past week of practice was extremely
intense and competitive. We knew we had some great teams coming
to play us. Last weekend was also important because it was
senior weekend. Monica, Jolene, KC and I wanted the weekend
to be successful; a weekend that we would all remember forever.
Well our wishes came true. I don't
think the weekend could have gone much better if we had planned
it ourselves. The senior festivities began right before the
Friday night match, where the coaches presented each of us
flowers and a team picture.
Each senior's accomplishments and
strengths were announced over the loud speaker to celebrate
the roles we have each played on this team for the past four,
or in my case, five, years. The brief presentation was a great
pep talk because we played extremely well Friday night, as
we beat the No. 3 team in the country, Cal State University-Hayward,
in an exciting four-game match.
While Friday night's victory was
great, our victory on Saturday night was even more amazing.
Saturday night we played the No. 1 team in the nation, Wittenberg.
We had a bit of a slow start against Wittenberg quickly dropping
two games, but we changed things up in game three and beat
them in five games.
Beating Wittenberg in that emotional
five-game match was just the confidence booster we need. It
is a great point in the season right now because with each
match and each day, we are getting better as a team.
Senior weekend closed with a short
party following the Wittenberg match. At the party, one underclassman
spoke on behalf of each of us four seniors. The underclassman
also presented each of us with a scrapbook full of memories
of the past season.
On behalf of the seniors, I would
like to thank the entire team and the coaches for making last
weekend such a great memory. We appreciate everything and
are truly touched with all the effort that went into the weekend.
And I know we are all so happy that
the season isn't over yet and we get to enjoy each other for
as long as this road takes us.
Katie Wildermuth is a senior from
San Clemente, Calif. She would love to answer e-mail
questions from Emory recruits and fans.
