March 27 , 2006 - Entry 1

After two great wins against Emory and Henry on the Saturday before UAAs, we knew it would be a good week.  With an off day Sunday and the whole week of softball to look forward to, we all decided go to dinner and bowling, which proved to be a great time just like last year.  Not only did Ashley bowl a strike while talking on her cell phone, but Ali tripled her high score of 30- a good night for everyone!

After a relaxing day Sunday and a quick practice Monday, we headed off to sunny Florida!!! We had a lot of fun on the bus ride, keeping ourselves busy making NCAA March Madness brackets (although most of our picks were upset early) and playing several rounds of “You Don’t Know Jack” on Kim’s computer in our endless attempts to beat Team Left Side (aka- Sarah).  Arriving at the Holiday Inn, we were excited to get our roommates and see our beautiful eagles that Mrs. Sunshine decorated and taped to our windows.

Tuesday morning brought our first game of the tournament, an 8-0 victory against Case Western University.  After a great start, we decided (in true Emory softball fashion) to celebrate at Jason’s Deli, informing the freshmen that this would be the first of MANY trips to Jason’s Deli throughout this and every other UAA tournament.  No one can resist the free ice cream!  Anyway, after our wonderful lunch, we returned to the hotel to find adidas bags with Emory Softball sweatpants inside!  We were ecstatic and couldn’t help but wear our “sweats ba dets” all week long.

On Wednesday, we had two more wins against Rochester and Brandeis and went back to the hotel to enjoy an afternoon with our parents.  With a free evening ahead, some of us went to the baseball game and had a great time watching our boys win.

On Thursday, we woke up excited for another breakfast in Coach A’s room and of course, our game against Wash U.  Unfortunately, we lost the game but left the park all the more excited about the rest of the tournament and the opportunity to face them again on Saturday.

Despite our loss, we couldn’t stay upset for long because Thursday night brought the UAA banquet at our hotel.  We enjoyed a great dinner followed by a dance-off.  We were shy at first, but when the DJ played Liz’s at bat song, “What is Love?” Kerns, Kim, and Rachel couldn’t help themselves, representing the freshmen and Emory Softball in style.  Thinking the night was over, we all went back upstairs only to be called out of our rooms by the infamous “T, T-Boggs, T,T, T-Boggs” chant.  Looking down from the balcony, we watched in awe as Coach Boggs destroyed her competition from Brandeis and Wash U, leaving them all copying her moves and wishing they had half of our rhythm.  And if that wasn’t enough, our bus driver, Antoinette, got a piece of the action as she and Douglas, our bus driver on the VA trip and the current driver for the baseball team, joined Coach Boggs.  In one of the most hilarious and memorable events on the trip, the three of them took home the dance contest and the respect of everyone watching, including the Wash U team, despite some of their best efforts to win.

Friday was a nice break as we got to sleep in and only had one game.  After beating Rochester, we sat in the shade by the pool and took on Betsy, Haag, and Sarah in peanut butter and jelly, followed by ERS, which Haag dominated.  All a little sore and beginning to feel the effects of the week, Sherri, our wonderful trainer, said we would benefit from an ice bath.  And what better way to do that than jump in the freezing pool!  Despite our best judgment, Sarah, Ashley, Haag, Carey, and I jumped in and counted down the seconds in the “ice bath.”  After maybe the longest 10 minutes of our lives, we left the pool re-energized for two more games!

After a solid win versus Brandeis on Saturday morning, we took on Wash U again in the final game of the tournament.  In a heartbreaker, we lost 1-0.  Although disappointed, we played a great game and left knowing that we had given our all and played our best.

Overall, it was a really great week and tons of fun!  Florida was warm and sunny, just as we’d hoped.  I could not have wished for a better way to spend spring break or a more fun group of people to spend it with.  I’m so excited for the rest of the season and I can’t wait for all of the fun times we will have together over the rest of the spring!
