April 19, 2006 - Entry 4

You can tell its getting towards the end of the season when your cleats begin to feel more natural and comfortable than your tennis shoes and when your ankles and hands are stained orange from playing in the dirt.  With only four games to go, the end of our regular season is creeping up on us.

As we are in the “pennant race” and fighting for a bid to NCAA regionals these last few games are critical.  This past Saturday and Tuesday we picked up four big wins that will be important for our post-season hopes.

On Saturday we traveled to Maryville, TN.  The Kerns’ family hosted a beautiful dinner for us on Friday night at a restaurant overlooking lake Ft. Louden, near where they live (Amanda comes from Knoxville).  I believe the saying goes, “the way to a ballplayer’s heart is through her stomach” (or something along those lines) and the Lakeside Tavern certainly captured our affections when we were served appetizers without even ordering.  I believe I’m still full from that dinner.  It was a beautiful meal in a beautiful setting and a great way for us to enjoy time with the family that could travel with us and celebrate Cassi’s 20th birthday.

Saturday, after a short walk to shake off the feeling of fullness from the night before, we took on Maryville.  Even though our offense didn’t match our defense’s outstanding performance we were able to clinch two W’s.

On Tuesday we traveled to LaGrange for a couple more in-region games.  This time our offense came together a little better as we swept the Cougars.  The first game was a tight one with a big hit by Freshman Ali Moler to tie the game at one run and then a big-time pitching performance by Kat in the bottom of the 8th.  With the international tie breaker rule in effect Kat got three straight batters to fly out and ended the game in true Kathy form: lots of energy and enthusiastic, fired-up high fives…even a misfired high-five that caught Liz in the face.

The second game our offense supported our pitching staff the way we like to do.  Ash pitched another outstanding game and our offense went through two more of LaGrange’s pitchers.  Fueled by shots from Betsy, Cassi, Moler and Carey our offense put up 9 runs to LaGrange’s 2 and earned the second victory of the day.

This Saturday we will take on SCAD for our last home competition of the regular season.  Our commitment to finishing the season strong has not changed and we will be working hard for the remainder of this week to ensure that we are able to uphold that pledge.  We are looking forward to seeing everyone who will be at the games on Saturday!
