Decemeber 12, 2005
Whew! What a crazy two weeks it's been for the Emory Women's Basketball team.
We continued our 6-game road schedule on Dec. 1st when we traveled to Piedmont and faced off against the Lions. We started of slow offensively, something that we've struggled with so far this season. But, our defense was really great, and once we got our offense to start executing, we really showed what a great team we can be. We went in the locker room up by 13 at halftime, and ended up winning the game by 20 points. It was a great win, and we felt really good about it, though we still knew there was much that needed to be improved.
Two days later, we traveled to LaGrange for our fifth game of the season. We again came out slow offensively, and unlike the Piedmont game, our defense wasn't really there in the first half. But, the second half, we got it together and ended up with another win. Again, we weren't exactly happy with our overall play against LaGrange, but relieved to have pulled out the "W".
We got the next day off from practice, knowing that Monday we would have to come in and be ready to focus. Tuesday, we would be playing University of the South, by far our toughest competition this far. So after a great day of practice on Monday, we made the drive to Sewanee, ready to face off against the Tigers. We came out on fire and shot 70% in the first half, and although the second half was not as kind to us scoring-wise, our defense held on and brought us another win, our fifth on the season.
And finally, to conclude our pre-Winter Break schedule, three days later, we traveled to Chattanooga to play against Tennessee Temple. We didn't really know much about this team going into the game, except that they would be a tough team that wouldn't back down easily. Well, neither do we.....we ended up winning the game by 9 points, extending our winning streak to five.
Although we are happy with our record (6-1...woo-hoo!), there is so much that we need to work on as a team. We know that we need to start making our free throws, because as we've witnessed, one or two missed free throws can decide a game. We know that we need to come out with more energy and more intensity on both ends of the court, and then maintain it the whole 40 minutes. And finally, we have realized that we need to stop being content with just winning, and start pushing ourselves further past our competition. Our schedule is going to get MUCH tougher from here on out, and we really need to learn to step it up. But, we all know that if we stay together as a team, we'll be ready for anything.
So all in all, after 4 road games in 10 days, hours of studying scouting reports (who knew you'd have so much homework on a basketball team?), a trip to the emergency room for stitches (Yeah, Katie!) and about forty pounds of post-game sweets provided by Coach's mother, we are all pretty ready to take a few days off for Winter Break and prepare ourselves for the bulk of our season. Hopefully, we can prove to have the stamina and endurance to keep our team together and come out with a winning season. Or as Coach puts it, "It's not a race, it's a marathon, ladies"....or something like that. GOOO EAGLES!!!
