EMORY ATHLETICS IS THINKING PINK!

Click here for information on Emory Athletics/ The Emory Wheel Think Pink events

Think Pink this season and join your fellow Emory Eagles in the battle against breast cancer. Did you know that breast cancer is the second most-common cancer among women in the United States? The American Cancer Society estimates that the chance of a woman developing breast cancer during her lifetime is one in eight. With odds like that, it is likely that you know somebody who has been affected by this devastating disease. While researchers have made advances in breast cancer detection and treatment over the last decade, there is no cure for breast cancer. That’s why we need your help.

During every Emory Eagles athletic event this season, you have the opportunity to purchase merchandise to support the fight against breast cancer. Items range from T-Shirts, Hats, lanyards, wristbands and much more. One hundred percent of the proceeds from these sales will go to breast cancer research at Emory University.

Emory to “THINK PINK” During Women’s Basketball Game vs. Washington University

(Feb. 13) – Emory University will “THINK PINK” this Sunday (Feb. 17) when the Eagles’ women’s basketball team hosts arch-rival Washington University starting at 2:00 p.m.

As part of the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association’s (WBCA) 2008 THINK PINK campaign, fans attending the game are asked to wear pink to show support in the fight against breast cancer.  The first 1,500 fans to the contest will receive a free Emory Eagles Think Pink shirt.  Other festivities will include free food, giveaways and entertainment. At half-time, families that have been affected by the disease as well as breast cancer survivors will be recognized.  The Emory athletic department will make a donation to both the Winship Cancer Institute and the Emory School of Medicine to assist in their cutting-edge technology in the battle against the dreaded disease.

In recognition of the “Think Pink” initiative, the Emory women’s basketball team will be wearing pink uniforms that have been specially designed for the afternoon by Russell Athletic.  Also in attendance for the donation ceremony will be representatives from a number of corporate sponsors who played a vital role in the event including: Courtyard Marriott Executive Park & Northlake, Russell Athletic, Tossed, the A&E Group, Emory Athletics, Sodexho, the Emory Bookstores and BJ’s Wholesale Club.

Admission to the game is free and donations will be accepted.  Emory Eagles THINK PINK merchandise as well as Breast Cancer Awareness items will be on sale.  All proceeds will go to the Winship Cancer Institute as well as the Emory School of Medicine Breast Cancer Research Program.  For additional information on the events or donations please contact Emory Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing Angie Duprey at 404-727-6739.

Launched in October, in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Think Pink is a joint effort of the Emory University Athletic Department and the Emory Breast Health Center in the fight against the dreaded disease. But the fight does not end there, as the Eagles will be “Thinking Pink” all through the winter season.

At each Emory home athletic event, those in attendance will have the opportunity to purchase Think Pinkmerchandise to support the battle against breast cancer.  Among the items for sale include t-shirts, hats, lanyards, wristbands as well as other accessories.  All proceeds from the sales will go to breast cancer research at Emory University.

In addition to home athletic events, people can show their support for breast cancer research by purchasing items at the following venues on the Emory campus.

  • Selected days at the Dobbs University Center, The Emory University Hospital and Winship Cancer Institute
  • Emory University Bookstore, Oxford College Bookstore

In addition, beginning November 13 and continuing through February 14, Emory Eagles special-edition pink merchandise will be available for purchase online with all proceeds going to fund research. Click here to make your purchase supporting breast cancer research.

The fundraising initiative will culminate on February 17 at the Emory-Washington University women’s basketball “Think Pink” game.  Fans will be asked to wear some pink shirts as part of the plan to have Woodruff PE Center “pinked out” that day.  In addition, breast cancer survivors will be recognized at halftime and a check will be presented to Breast Cancer research programs at the Winship Cancer Institute, and the Emory Department of Surgery.  Those who have donated will be invited to attend a luncheon that afternoon as well as other festivities.

The Emory athletic department is receiving support in its efforts from numerous departments on campus including but not limited to Emory Healthcare, the Emory Women’s Center, School of Public Health, Emory Alumni Association and the President’s Commission for the Status of Women.

The “Think Pink” campaign was conceived by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) prior to the 2006-07 season in an effort to raise breast cancer awareness in women’s basketball, college campuses and communities.  Last year, more than 120 schools joined forces in the effort and helped make the first year a rousing success.
