GETTING TO KNOW ...

Name: Julia Skye Sanders

Favorite Food: Spaghetti and Ice Cream

Favorite Movie: The Constant Gardener

Favorite Television Show: I don't really have a favorite show, but I watch the Discovery Channel a lot. I also watch those lame mid-afternoon MTV shows like Next and Parental Control.

Favorite Musical Artist: Eve 6

A word to describe me on the field: Determined

A word to describe me off the field: Intense

My most memorable athletic moment was: The first goal I scored for my high school team against our arch-rivals.

My most memorable Emory athletic moment: A defensive play I made against Brandeis my freshman year. It was a really hard 50/50 tackle and I came out with the ball and started a counter-attack. It was one of those huge adrenaline rushes.

What I like most about Emory: People at Emory work hard and play hard - it's the best of both worlds.

I would like to switch places for the day with: My dog. My only responsibilities would be eating, sleeping, and playing in the snow.

My favorite place on the Emory campus: The back patio of the Woodruff Library. It's a great place to study or have lunch, and you can see the stars perfectly at night.

Favorite pro athlete:  Lance Armstrong

The sports teams I followed when I was younger: Denver Broncos, US Women's Soccer Team, Manchester United

My favorite class at Emory and why: HIST 365 - The History of Slavery with Dr. David Eltis. This class changed my entire view of world history, ethics and modern society. Every day in class was an epiphany, a new moral dilemma, a different way of looking at history. Dr. Eltis was fantastic - it was amazing to get the opportunity to discuss history with one of the world's leading experts as an undergraduate.

The people who have helped me most at Emory are and why: All my friends because they have been by my side through all the ups and downs of college. My neurobiology professor, Dr. Ron Calabrese, because he has pushed me to investigate so many academic opportunities and really cares about my experience here at Emory. And of course the soccer team, because they are the people I look forward to seeing every day and give me a release from the stresses of school and life.

Any pre-game rituals:  I always put my left cleat and shinguard on before the right...I don't really know where that came from but I never play well if I do it the other way.
Also, I always have to strap into my headgear!

The sport I would be playing if I wasn’t playing soccer: Squash

If I could have dinner with only three people in history, they would be: Abraham Lincoln, Descartes, and Elton John

The best advice I have ever been given and who gave it to you: "First with the head, then with the heart." It is from my favorite book, The Power of One, by Bryce Courtenay.

What is something that very few, if any, people know about you: I'm extremely afraid of the dark.
