GETTING TO KNOW JANE UKANDU …
Name: Jane Ukandu
Favorite Food: High quality, medium-well rib-eye steak
Favorite Movie: The Godfather… especially part II
Favorite Television Show: The Wonder Years…yes, I know its kind of old
Favorite Musical Artist: Stevie Wonder
A word to describe me when I am competing: Intense
A word to describe me away from the athletic venue: Free-Spirited.
My most memorable athletic moment was: I just finished sprinting my hardest in the finals of the NCAA Championships and I’m nervous because I can’t tell how I finished as a result of being all the way at the lane farthest to the right. I thought I finished last and didn’t realize I had beat two girls on the opposite side. So, I’m sitting on the field feeling pretty low and all of a sudden I hear Coach Goss yell “Good job Jane!” I look up and I see people from Emory trying to hold up there fingers to show me how I placed and I don’t have my contacts in. Then my teammate, Katie Anding, yells “Seven,” and relief just flooded through my whole body.
My most memorable Emory athletic moment: The Clemson Meet my freshman year when the 4x400 relay I was on qualified for Nationals and shattered the school record.
What I like most about Emory: The beautiful campus and all the amazing people I know here.
I would like to switch places for the day with: Someone studying abroad in Paris.
My favorite place on the Emory campus: The Quad
Favorite pro athlete: Lance Armstrong
The sports teams I followed when I was younger: When I was younger I only cared about sports during the Olympics, and the one team I followed was the U.S. Women’s Gymnastics Team.
My favorite class at Emory and why: Intro to Sociology. Sociology is such an amazing field of study and I love analyzing our society and the way it impacts almost every aspect of how we think.
The people who have helped me most at Emory are and why: The fabulous women that I met through my sorority for being there for me, and Coach James Goss for helping me see my potential and succeed on the track. I don’t think I would have attained all I have as an athlete at Emory without him.
Any pre-meet/competition rituals: Icing my knees the night before a race.
The sport I would be playing if I wasn’t running/on the track and field team: Ultimate Frisbee.
If I could have dinner with only three people in history, they would be: John Lennon, Martin Luther King, Oprah.
The best advice I have ever been given and who gave it to you: “Be happy, take care of yourself, and always pray.” ~ Dad.
What is something that very few, if any, people know about you: Wouldn’t you like to know…
Jane is a senior from Sugar Land, TX. She would love to answer e-mail
questions from Emory recruits and fans.
