(May 16) Emory University concluded the
NCAA individual championships with a school-record five All-Americans.
The previous record was three on multiple occasions.
The pairing of Mark Odgers and Alex Jacobs
was accorded the honor after receiving the top seed for the NCAA
doubles championship. The two were eliminated in the quarterfinals.
Odgers also made the All-America team in
singles after receiving the No. 6 seed for the NCAA singles championship.
He was eliminated in the round of 32 in the NCAA singles tournament.
Tyson Ramsay reached the round of 16 in
the NCAA singles tournament to become a singles All-American. He
won his opening match, 7-5, 6-2, in an upset against the No. 5 seed,
Brian Casey of Califonia-Santa Cruz, who had beaten Ramsay in the
team tournament the day before. In the round of 16, Ramsay was forced
to retire in the third set against Andrew Murray of Williams (Mass.),
an eventual semifinalist.
The trio join Patrick Redmond and Jesse
Ferlianto, who both made the All-America team based on last fall.
Redmond won the Intercollegiate Tennis Association regional singles
championship while Ferlianto did the same in doubles with Odgers
(Jacobs was studying abroad). Redmond finished fifth at the ITA
fall national championship while Odgers-Ferlianto placed second.
(May 14) Emory University finished third
at the NCAA Division III national team championship. This is the
third consecutive year Emory reached the national semifinals. It
was second in 2002 and won the national title last year.
This is the 13th consecutive year the team
reached the national quarterfinals. This year, Emory beat Washington
(Mo.), 4-0, in the quarterfinals.
In the semifinals, Emory lost to the eventual
national champion, Middlebury (Vt.), 4-1. Emory then won the third-place
match with a come-from-behind 4-3 win against California-Santa Cruz.
Emory finishes the season with a 24-2 record,
its only other loss in the season opener to Division I Georgia Tech.
The Eagles were 11-1 against national top-25 Division III teams.
(May 4) Alex Jacobs heads a list of six
Emory players selected to the all-conference team by the University
Athletic Association. Conference coaches vote for the all-UAA teams
based on performances in the annual conference championship.
Jacobs was chosen for the all-UAA first
team at No. 3 singles, the only Emory player to make the first team
in singles. Teammates Mark Odgers (No. 1), Tyson Ramsay (No. 2),
Patrick Redmond (No. 4), and Josh Rubens (No. 5) made the all-conference
second team in their respective singles positions.
The doubles tandems of Odgers-Jacobs (No.
1) and Ramsay-Rubens (No. 2) were voted to the all-UAA first team.
The duo of Jesse Ferlianto and Redmond made the all-UAA second team
at No. 3 doubles.
UAA Coaching Staff of the Year honors went
to Emory Head Coach John Browning and his assistants, Kyle Nelson
and Tomas Szabados.
(May 4) Three Emory University players
have been selected for the NCAA Division III national individual
championships. Juniors Mark Odgers and Tyson Ramsay will compete
in the singles championship while Odgers and junior Alex Jacobs
pair up for the doubles championship.
This is the third consecutive year all
three have been chosen for the respective individual championships.
Odgers and Ramsay are ranked fifth and
ninth, respectively, in the nation among Division III singles players,
according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Odgers-Jacobs
are ranked No. 2 nationally in doubles.
Last season, Odgers advanced to the quarterfinals
of the singles championship while Ramsay reached the round of 16.
Odgers-Jacobs made it to the semifinals of the doubles championship.
The individual championships are May 15-17
in Lewiston, Maine. All three players will be there ahead of time
competing in the NCAA national team championship May 12-14. Emory
is the defending national champion and ranked No. 1 in the nation
this season.
(May 3) Emory University competes in the
quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III national team championship
May 12. The Eagles, ranked No. 1 in the nation, face conference
member Washington (Mo.).
This is a rematch of the University Athletic
Association finals, won by Emory, 4-1, April 25. If Emory wins,
its semifinal opponent would be either Trinity (Texas) or Middlebury
(Vt.).
This is the 13th consecutive year Emory
has reached the national quarterfinals. Emory is 22-1 this season
with its only loss in the season opener to Division I Georgia Tech.
(May 2) No.1 ranked Emory University began
its defense of the NCAA Division III national team championship
by ousting No. 10 Washington & Lee (Va.) 5-2 in the second round.
With the victory, the Eagles move on the national quarterfinals
for the 13th consecutive year.
The match took place indoors because of inclement weather. On the
season, the Eagles stand at 22-1 in dual matches, the best winning
percentage in team history. Emory needs three more wins to match
the team mark for most wins in a season of 25 set by the 1981 team,
which played 36 matches that year.
Mark Odgers, Alex Jacobs, and Jesse Ferlianto each won both of their
matches in singles and doubles. Jacobs, with his 53rd career singles
victory, moved into top 20 in Emory history for career singles wins.
Josh Rubens won in straight sets to improve to 22-4 on the season
at No. 5 singles. He is tied with Patrick Redmond for the most singles
wins this season on the team.
(May 1) Emory University will face Washington
& Lee (VA) tomorrow morning in the second round of the NCAA
Division III regional championship. Washington & Lee defeated
Piedmont College (GA) this afternoon by a 6-1 score.
Emory is currently ranked No 1 in the nation for NCAA Division III
schools by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), while Washington
& Lee is ranked tenth. Tomorrow's match is schedule to begin
at 11 am at Emory.
(April 27) Emory University has been selected
for the NCAA Division III national tournament for the 15th consecutive
year. The Eagles, ranked No. 1 in the nation, seek to defend their
national championship from 2003.
Emory hosts an NCAA regional tournament
this weekend. The Eagles received a first-round bye and will play
Sunday at 11 a.m. against the winner of the Washington & Lee
(Va.)-Piedmont (Ga.) match.
If Emory wins Sunday, it advances to the
national quarterfinals for the 13th consecutive year.
Selections for the NCAA individual championships
will be made next Tuesday, May 4.
(April 26) The Intercollegiate Tennis Association
(ITA) released the regional rankings for NCAA Division III schools.
In the southern division, Emory has a team ranking of No. 1. In
singles, the Eagles have five players ranked in the top 25: Mark
Odgers (2), Tyson Ramsay (7), Alex Jacobs (9), Patrick Redmond (12),
and Josh Rubens (19). In doubles, Emory has three teams ranked in
the top 10: Odgers/Jacobs (1), Ramsay/Rubens (4), and Jesse Ferlianto/Redmond
(9).
(April 25) Emory University captured its
15th consecutive University Athletic Association (UAA) title over
the weekend. The Eagles faced opponents from Brandeis University
(MA), Carnegie Mellon University (PA), and Washington University
(MO).
The first match of the tournament featured Emory versus Brandeis
with the Eagles winning 4-1. In singles, Emory received wins from
Tyson Ramsay (6-1, 6-1), Alex Jacobs (6-4, 7-6), Patrick Redmond
(6-1, 6-1), and Josh Rubens (6-2, 6-3).
Emory faced Carnegie Mellon in the second round of matches and won
7-0. In doubles, the Eagles won all three matches. The team of Jacobs
and Mark Odgers defeated their opponents with an 8-0 score. At No.
2 doubles, Ramsay and Rubens earned a win with an 8-1 score and
at No. 3 doubles, the pairing of Jesse Ferlianto and Redmond also
earned an 8-1 victory. In the singles matches, the Eagles swept
all six positions: Odgers (6-0, 6-4), Ramsay (6-1, 6-3), Jacobs
(6-1, 6-1), Redmond (6-2, 6-4), Rubens (6-1, 6-0), and Ferlianto
(6-1, 6-2).
In the final match Emory defeated Washington by a 4-1 score to win
the UAA title. In singles, only four matches were completed with
Odgers (7-5, 6-1), Jacobs (6-2, 6-4), and Redmond (6-0, 6-1) earning
wins. In doubles, the Eagles won two out of three matches with the
team of Jacobs and Odgers defeating their opponents 8-5 and the
partnership of Ramsay and Rubens earning a win with an 8-4 score.
Emory improves its season win/loss record to 21-1.
(Apr. 19) Emory University won 6-1 this
afternoon against Shorter College (GA). The Eagles improve to 18-1
on the season.
In singles, Emory won five out of six matches with wins coming from
Tyson Ramsay (7-6 (3), 4-6, 10-4), Patrick Redmond (6-2, 6-0), Josh
Rubens (6-0, 6-0), Jesse Ferlianto (6-1, 6-0), and Yoji Masuoka
(6-0, 6-3).
The Eagles swept all three doubles matches and did so by only giving
up a total of four games. At No. 1 doubles, the team of Ramsay and
Rubens defeated their opponents by a score of 8-1. In the No. 2
slot, Ferlianto and Redmond partnered together to win 8-1 and in
the No. 3 position, Mark Odgers and Masuoka earned an 8-2 win.
Emory will compete in the University Athletic Association (UAA)
conference tournament this weekend.
(Apr. 16) Emory University, currently ranked
No. 1 in the nation for NCAA Division III schools by the Intercollegiate
Tennis Assocation (ITA), earned a shutout victory of 7-0 over Washington
& Lee (VA), who is ranked No. 10. The Eagles improve their season
win/loss record to 17-1.
In doubles, the Eagles took two out of three matches with wins coming
from Alex Jacobs and Mark Odgers (8-3), as well as the team of Yoji
Masuoka and Patrick Redmond (9-8 (7-4)).
Going into the singles competition with a 1-0 lead, the Eagles swept
all six matches. Mark Odgers (No. 1) had a 6-0, 6-4 win over his
opponent; Tyson Ramsay (No. 2) earned a hard fought victory of 7-6
(7-3), 6-2; and Alex Jacobs (No. 3) had an easy win of 6-0, 6-1.
To round out the singles, Redmond, who played in the No. 4 position
had a 7-6 (7-5), 6-0 victory; Josh Rubens (No. 5) had a two-set
win of 6-3, 6-2; and Jesse Ferlianto (No. 6) only gave up three
games to win 6-3, 6-0 over his opponent.
(Apr. 10) No. 1 ranked Emory University
defeated No. 18 ranked Washington College (Md.) by a score of 6-1.
In singles, Tyson Ramsay, who is ranked ninth in the nation by the
Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), upset Peter Taylor of
Washington, who is ranked third in the nation in three sets: 7-5,
5-7, 7-5. The Eagles also received wins from Patrick Redmond, Josh
Rubens, Jesse Ferlianto, and Yoji Masuoka.
In doubles, the team of Ramsay and Rubens, who played the No. 1
position, defeated a top-twenty team with an 8-3 score. At No. 2
doubles, Ferlianto and Redmond defeated their opponents 8-5 and
at No. 3, Jacobs and Masuoka completed the sweep with an 8-1 win.
Emory improves its season win/loss record to 16-1.
(Apr. 9) Emory University participated
in the Small College Blue-Gray Classic held on the campus of Auburn
University at Montgomery (AL) last weekend. The Eagles faced opponents
from NAIA schools in all of their matches.
In the first match, Emory met with Spring Hill College (AL) and
won 6-3. The Eagles earned singles wins from Tyson Ramsay, Alex
Jacobs, Josh Rubens, and Jesse Ferlianto. In doubles, Emory took
two out of three matches with Ramsay and Rubens, who played No.
2, defeating their opponents (8-5) and Jesse Ferlianto and Patrick
Redmond at No. 3 winning with a score of 8-2.
Emory was victorious in their second match, which was against the
College of Santa Fe (NM), by a score of 5-4. In singles, Alex Jacobs
and Jesse Ferlianto came out on top with three-set victories over
their respective opponents (6-3, 1-6, 6-2 and 3-6, 6-0, 6-3). In
doubles, the duo of Tyson Ramsay and Josh Rubens earned a win with
a score of 8-4. The team of Ferlianto and Patrick Redmond also had
a victory by defeating their opponents 8-6.
In the final match of the tournament Emory faced Savannah College
of Art & Design (SCAD) and earned a win with a 5-0 score. The
Eagles swept the doubles matches, which earned them three points.
In singles, Mark Odgers defeated his opponent 6-1, 6-1 and Tyson
Ramsay clinched the win with a score of 6-1, 6-1 over his opponent.
The Eagles improve their win/loss record to 15-1 on the season.
(Mar. 27) Emory defeated Averett College
(VA) today by a score of 7-0. In doubles, the Eagles swept all three
matches for a 1-0 lead. Tyson Ramsay and Josh Rubens, who played
the No. 1 position, defeated their opponents 8-5. Mark Odgers partnered
with Yoji Masuoka to earn a win over their opponents 8-4.
In singles, Emory continued to dominate
as they did in doubles, by sweeping their opponents. Mark Odgers
(No.1) defeated his opponent with a 6-3, 6-2 score and Tyson Ramsay
(No.2) earned a hard-fought victory with a score of 4-6, 6-1, 6-2.
Alex Jacobs, who played in the No. 3 singles position, easily won
6-1, 6-1 and Patrick Redmond (No. 4) added another win with a 6-0,
6-2 score. Playing in the No. 5 spot, Josh Rubens defeated his opponent
6-2, 6-3 and in the No. 6 position, Jesse Ferlianto dominated his
opponent by a score of 6-0, 6-0.
(Mar. 26) The Eagles defeated Kalamazoo
College (MI) today by a score of 5-2. Kalamazoo, which is ranked
20th in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA),
has won a total of seven NCAA Division III national team championships.
Emory, which is ranked No. 1 in the nation by the ITA, is the defending
national team champion.
Emory began the singles matches with a
1-0 lead after sweeping all three doubles matches. In the singles,
the Eagles took four of six matches with each of the victories coming
in straight-sets. Mark Odgers, who played No. 1, defeated his opponent
6-1, 6-1 and at No. 3 was Alex Jacobs, who won 6-4, 6-4. Patrick
Redmond (No.4) earned a victory with a score of 6-2, 6-1 and Jesse
Ferlianto, who played in the No. 6 position, defeated his opponent
6-3, 6-4.

(March 21) The Eagles earned two more victories
today improving their season win/loss record to 10-1.
In the first match, Emory faced DePauw
University (IN) and won 6-0. In doubles, the partnership of Mark
Odgers and Yoji Masuoka had a convincing win over their opponents
with a score of 8-2. In singles, five out of six matches were won
in two sets. The straight set victories came from Odgers, Josh Rubens,
Jesse Ferlianto, Yoji Masuoka and JP Bartonico.
In the second match of the afternoon,
Emory faced Piedmont College (GA) and earned a victory of 5-2. The
Eagles swept all three doubles matches to go into singles with a
1-0 lead. The win was secured for Emory with victories from Ferlianto,
Masuoka, Bartonico, and Lee Friedman.
(March 17) Emory University wrapped up
a week-long Spring Break trip by going 3-0. The Eagles improve their
season win/loss record to 8-1. Emory defeated Florida Southern College,
the University of Indianapolis, and Eckerd College (FL), all NCAA
Division II schools, during the break.
The Eagles defeated Florida Southern 6-3
with singles wins from Alex Jacobs, Josh Rubens, and Jesse Ferlianto.
Emory swept the three doubles matches with a combined score of 25-16.
Against the University of Indianapolis,
the Eagles were unstoppable as they won 9-0. In doubles the teams
of Jacobs/Mark Odgers, Tyson Ramsay/Rubens, and Ferlianto/Patrick
Redmond once again swept all three matches.
In the last match of the trip, Emory faced
Eckerd College and defeated them 5-1. As the singles matches began,
Emory had a 2-1 lead, but Ramsay, Rubens, and Ferlianto sealed the
victory for the Eagles and the rest of the matches were stopped
before completion.
Emory is currently ranked No.1 in the
nation for NCAA Division III schools by the Intercollegiate Tennis
Association (ITA).

(Feb. 29) Emory University beat host Gustavus
Adolphus College (Minn.) 5-2 to capture the title at the Intercollegiate
Tennis Association (ITA) Division III National Indoor Championship.
Top-seeded Emory was making its third championship match appearance
in four years at this event, winning its first title.
In today's final, Emory won the doubles point then got wins in singles
from Alex Jacobs, Patrick Redmond, Josh Rubens and Jesse Ferlianto.
Rubens clinched the win at No. 5 singles, 7-6, 6-1. Jacobs, Redmond
and Ferlianto all went 3-0 in singles for the Eagles this weekend.
"We started out a little flat this week, but we we got better
as it went along." Emory coach John Browning said. "This
is a great tournament because it lets you know where you're at as
a team, and winning it gives you a lot of confidence for the remainder
of the season."
This tournament featured six of the top eight teams in the latest
ITA rankings and is a preview of the season-ending NCAA Championships
in May. Emory, last season's NCAA champ, entered this week's tournament
at No. 1 in the ITA rankings.
Emory beat MIT in Friday's first round and Trinity (Texas) in yesterday's
semifinals, both by 5-2 scores. The Eagles, who have no seniors
in their starting lineup, have appeared in all four ITA National
Team Indoor Championships, and improved to 9-3 at this event.

(Feb. 28) Emory University advanced to
the finals of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division
III indoor team championship by knocking off sixth-ranked Trinity
University (TX). Junior Mark Odgers, who is ranked fifth in the
nation in singles for NCAA Division III schools by the ITA, defeated
his opponent, who is ranked in the top 30, in three sets, 4-6, 7-6,
6-3. The Eagles also earned singles wins from Alex Jacobs, Josh
Rubens, and Jesse Ferlianto. In doubles, only two matches were needed
to clinch the victory as the pairings of Tyson Ramsay and Rubens,
as well as Ferlianto and Patrick Redmond both defeated their opponents,
8-4. Emory faces host Gustavus Adolphus College in the finals.
(Feb. 27) Emory University, ranked No.
1 in the nation by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA)
for NCAA Division III schools, defeated 16th ranked MIT, 5-2 in
the quarterfinals of the ITA Division III indoor team championship.
In singles competition, the Eagles received wins from Alex Jacobs,
Patrick Redmond, Josh Rubens and Jesse Ferlianto. In doubles, the
team of Jacobs and Mark Odgers earned a win over their opponents,
8-4 and the pair of Ferlianto and Redmond also won, 8-2. Emory faces
Trinity University (TX) in semi-final competition.
(Feb. 22) Emory University earned victories
over Rhodes College (Tenn.) and University of the South (Tenn.)
today in the Sewanee Invitational. The Eagles defeated Rhodes College
7-0 and also won against U. of the South 7-0.
Freshman Yoji Masuoka continues to improve his singles win/loss
record (7-1) as he earned two-set victories over both of his opponents
from Rhodes and U. of the South with scores of 6-1, 6-1 and 6-1,
6-1.
Sophomore Patrick Redmond continues to
live up to title as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA)
regional singles champion as he defeated opponents from both schools
6-3, 6-0 and 6-2, 6-2.
In doubles, the duo of Alex Jacobs and
Mark Odgers, who are ranked No. 2 in the nation for NCAA Division
III schools by the ITA, also earned victories over Rhodes (8-4)
and U. of the South (8-6).
(Feb. 7) Emory University, who is ranked
No. 1 in the nation for NCAA Division III by the Intercollegiate
Tennis Association (ITA), opened its 2004 season with a 6-1 loss
to Georgia Tech.
The Yellow Jackets, who compete in NCAA
Division I athletics, entered the match ranked 43rd in the nation
by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
Freshman Yoji Masuoka was the only Eagle
to record a win as he defeated his opponent in a two-set victory
with scores of 6-4, 6-4.
(Feb. 5) In a late addition to the schedule,
Emory University faces Georgia Tech this Saturday at 3 p.m. The
Eagles travel to the Bill Moore Tennis Center on the campus of Georgia
Tech.
The Yellow Jackets are ranked 43rd in the
nation for NCAA Division I schools by the Intercollegiate Tennis
Association (ITA). Emory, who is the defending national team champion,
is ranked No. 1 in the nation for Division III schools.
The Eagles feature two singles players
who are ranked in the top 10 in Division III: Mark Odgers (No. 5)
and Tyson Ramsay (No. 9). Also, the doubles team of Odgers and Alex
Jacobs is ranked No. 2 in the nation among Division III pairings.
(Dec.15, 2003) Emory University is No.
1 in the nation in NCAA Division III in the end-of-the-fall rankings
released by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). Emory
also received a No. 1 team ranking for the South region.
Four Emory players are listed in the national
singles rankings and one pairing is listed in the national doubles
rankings.
Mark Odgers is ranked fifth in the nation
in singles, followed by Tyson Ramsay (9), Patrick Redmond (16),
and Josh Rubens (35). The doubles combination of Odgers and Alex
Jacobs is No. 2 in the nation.
In the regional rankings, Odgers is No.
2, followed by Ramsay (3), Redmond (6), Rubens (14), Jesse Ferlianto
(20), and Yogi Masuoka (31). Odgers and Jacobs are the top-ranked
doubles pairing in the region.
Last spring, Emory won the NCAA Division
III national team championship.
(Oct. 18, 2003) Patrick Redmond finished
fifth at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association national championships.
Today, Redmond beat Linfield's (Ore.) Tim
Layman, 7-5, 6-4, in the fifth-place match of the NCAA Division
III bracket.
Last spring, Redmond was the team's unofficial
No. 7 singles player. He did not play in any of Emory's post-season
matches as the Eagles went on to win the NCAA national team championship.
Now Redmond is an All-American, thanks
to his regional singles championship last month. When the fall national
singles rankings are released, Redmond likely will be among the
top 10 in the nation for Division III.
(Oct. 17, 2003) Emory University's doubles
pairing of Mark Odgers and Jesse Ferlianto finished second at the
Intercollegiate Tennis Association national championships.
The duo fell in the finals, 7-5, 6-4, to
a pairing from Trinity (Texas). This is the second consecutive year
that Odgers has placed second at the ITA nationals. Last year, he
did so with partner Alex Jacobs, who is abroad this semester.
Emory's Patrick Redmond won his singles
match in the consolation draw, a 6-4, 7-5 decision against a player
from New York University. Redmond plays tomorrow for fifth place
versus an opponent from Linfield (Ore.).
(Oct. 16, 2003) Emory University's doubles
pairing of Mark Odgers and Jesse Ferlianto has advanced to the finals
of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association national championships.
The duo prevailed in the semifinals, 4-6,
6-2, 10-8, against an entry from Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.). The
Emory pair was a 6-1, 6-3 winner in the quarterfinals against a
doubles team from Rochester (N.Y.).
Tomorrow the Emory pair faces an opponent
from Trinity (Texas.).
In singles, Emory's Patrick Redmond lost
his quarterfinal match, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2, to a competitor from Gustavus
Adolphus. Redmond goes into the consolation draw starting tomorrow.
This is the second consecutive year Odgers
has reached the doubles finals at the ITA nationals. He and teammate
Alex Jacobs were runner-ups last year. The same pair finished fifth
at the ITA nationals in 2001.
(Oct. 14, 2003) Emory University's doubles
pairing of Mark Odgers and Jesse Ferlianto has been awarded the
top seed for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association national championship.
The ITA nationals are Oct. 16-19 in Corpus Christi, Texas.
Odgers is competing in the ITA nationals
in doubles for the third consecutive year. Last year, he and Alex
Jacobs were the national runner-up in the NCAA Division III draw.
Emory sophomore Patrick Redmond, the South
region champion, is unseeded in the eight-player singles draw for
Division III.
(Oct. 5, 2003) Emory University swept the
singles and doubles titles at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association
regional championships.
Patrick Redmond won the singles championship
while Mark Odgers and Jesse Ferlianto teamed up for the doubles
championship. All three earned All-America honors and a trip to
the ITA nationals in Corpus Christi, Texas, Oct. 16-19.
Redmond, who was unseeded in the 64-player
singles draw, beat teammate Josh Rubens in the finals, 6-3, 1-6,
6-3. As a freshman last season, Redmond had a 2-1 singles record
in varsity matches. He becomes the sixth Eagle ever to win the singles
crown at the ITA regional tournament.
Odgers and Ferlianto, the No. 2 doubles
seed, were 8-4 winners against the No. 1 seed, a duo from Piedmont
(Ga.). This is the first time Odgers and Ferlianto have competed
as partners.
This is the third consecutive year that
Odgers has won the regional doubles title. He did so the last two

is the fourth consecutive year, and fourth time in school history,
that an Emory pairing has captured the regional doubles championship.
Odgers is now a five-time All-American,
tying him for second place in the school record book. Other five-time
honorees are Todd Kennedy (1989-92) and Travis Saacke (1992-95).
The record is six career All-America citations by Brett Kaplan (1998-2001).
(Oct. 4, 2003) Emory University will be
represented in the singles and doubles finals at the Intercollegiate
Tennis Association regional championships. Three Emory players reached
the singles semifinals and one doubles pairing made the finals,
all to be played tomorrow.
Emory's Yoji Masuoka, the No. 6 seed, faces
teammate Josh Rubens in one semifinal. Unseeded Rubens upset teammate
Mark Odgers, the tournament's top seed, in the quarterfinals, 6-4,
6-3. Rubens also beat the No. 8 seed in the round of 16.
The other singles semifinals features Emory's
Patrick Redmond against an opponent from Piedmont (Ga.), who knocked
off Emory's Jesse Ferlianto, the No. 2 seed, in the round of 16.
Redmond, who is unseeded, beat the No. 5 seed in the round of 16
and the No. 4 seed in the quarterfinals.
The pairing of Odgers and Ferlianto, seeded
second, advanced to the doubles final where they face the No. 1
seed, a duo from Piedmont. Odgers-Ferlianto were semifinal winners
against teammates Rubens-Zachary Smith. Rubens-Smith earlier beat
the No. 3 seed.
The Piedmont pairing beat Emory's Redmond-Masuoka
in the other semifinal match. Redmond-Masuoka earlier beat the No.
4 seed.
Winners of the ITA regional championships
advance to the ITA national tournament in Corpus Christi Oct. 16-19.
Last year, Odgers and Alex Jacobs (studying abroad this semester)
won the ITA regional doubles championship.
(Oct. 3, 2003) Emory University has placed
six players in the round of 16 in the singles draw at the Intercollegiate
Tennis Association regional championship in Sewanee, Tenn. The Eagles
also have two doubles pairings in the quarterfinals.
Emory's Mark Odgers is the tournament's
No. 1 seed in singles while teammates Jesse Ferlianto and Yoji Masuoka
are seeded second and sixth. All three reached the roud of 16 along
with Patrick Redmond, Josh Rubens, and Zachary Smith.
Odgers and Ferlianto are the No. 2 seed
in doubles. They are in the doubles quartefinals as is the Emory
pairing of Rubens and Smith.
Last year, Odgers was the doubles champion
(with partner Alex Jacobs) and the singles runner-up at the ITA
regional tournament. He and Jacobs eventually finished second at
the ITA nationals.
Jacobs and Tyson Ramsay, two members of
the 2003 NCAA national team champion, are studying abroad this semester.
