The Eagles then faced Clemson, who are ranked 36th in the
nation in Division I, and fell 7-0.
Saturday, Emory faced Auburn University
at Montgomery, the NAIA's second ranked team in the nation,
losing 4-0. Finally, the Eagles closed out the weekend with
a 5-2 win over Division I opponent Charleston Southern.
Next weekend the Eagles travel to
Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) for the Intercollegiate
Tennis Association National Team Indoor Championship.
(Jan. 30) Emory University is ranked
third in the nation in NCAA Division III according to the
fall rankings of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
The Eagles boast five singles players in the top 50 nationally,
and two doubles pairs in the top 10 in the nation.
The Eagles have been among the top
three teams in every national poll since 2002 and have not
been ranked out of the top five since 1999. Emory was ranked
No. 3 in last season's final poll after placing third in last
season's NCAA national tournament.
In the singles polls, sophomore Yoji
Masuoka enters the spring ranked third in the nation after
winning the ITA regional championship and placing third in
the ITA national championship. This is the first time he has
held a national rank.
Tyson Ramsay and Mark Odgers made
the national top 20 in singles as No. 13 and 17, respectively.
Patrick Redmond and Josh Rubens are also among the top 50.
Winners of the ITA regional, the
doubles pairing of Odgers and Alex Jacobs are ranked No. 5
in the nation, while Ramsay and Rubens are ranked ninth. This
is the fourth year of partnership for seniors Odgers and Jacobs
who, beginning their freshman year, have been listed among
the five best pairs in every national poll.
Emory enters the season ranked first
in the region with Masuoka and Odgers and Jacobs holding the
top places in the singles and doubles rankings. Nine Eagles
are ranked among the top 20 in the region in singles, while
four doubles pairs made the top 14.
(Oct. 16, 2004) Yoji Masuoka claimed
third place in the singles draw at the Intercollegiate Tennis
Association (ITA) national championships.
Masuoka was a 5-7, 6-2, 7-6 (7) winner
against Jordan Taillon of Trinity (Texas), who was ranked
32nd in the final national singles rankings last season.
Last season, Masuoka had a 10-1 singles
record, playing mostly at No. 6 singles for the Eagles, who
finished third at the NCAA national championships.
Yesterday, Emory's doubles entry
of Mark Odgers and Alex Jacobs finished in fifth place, the
third time in four years that the two earned a spot in the
ITA national tournament.
All three Emory players are accorded
All-America status by winning their respective ITA regional
titles.
(Oct. 15, 2004) Yoji Masuoka dropped
his semifinal singles match at the Intercollegiate Tennis
Association national championships.
Masuoka was defeated, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3,
by the tournament's No. 2 seed, Kevin Casey of California-Santa
Cruz, who was ranked 31st in the final national singles rankings
last season. Masuoka plays for third place Saturday against
Jordan Taillon of Trinity (Texas), who was ranked 32nd in
the final national singles rankings.
Emory's doubles entry of Mark Odgers
and Alex Jacobs finished in fifth place after winning both
matches today. The duo won against a Middlebury (Vt.) pairing,
6-4, 6-1. Then Odgers/Jacobs won the fifth-place match, 7-5,
6-4, to a Mary Washington (Va.) pairing.
All three Emory players are accorded
All-America status by winning their respective regional titles.
(Oct. 14, 2004) Yoji Masuoka won
his opening singles match at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association
national championships. He advances to the semifinals of the
NCAA Division III draw.
Masuoka won 6-7 (2), 6-1, 6-0 against
Ben Lundell of Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.). The Emory sophomore
now faces the No. 2 seed, Kevin Casey of California-Santa
Cruz.
Emory's doubles entry of Mark Odgers
and Alex Jacobs lost its opening match, 4-6, 7-5, 11-9, to
a pairing from Pacific Lutheran (Wash.). Odgers and Jacobs,
the top seed in the doubles tournament, move into the consolation
draw against a pairing from Middlebury (Vt.), the defending
NCAA national team champion.
Masuoka, Odgers and Jacobs qualified
for the ITA nationals by winning the singles and doubles titles,
respectively, at the ITA regionals Sept. 24-26.
(Sept. 26) For the second consecutive
year, Emory University swept the singles and doubles titles
at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association regional championships.
Unseeded Yoji Masuoka claimed the
singles title with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 win against teammate Tyson
Ramsay, the tournament's No. 3 seed. Masuoka made it to the
ITA singles semifinals last season, one in which he ended
up with a 10-1 singles record. Emory's Patrick Redmond, also
unseeded, won the ITA singles draw in 2003.
For the third time in four years,
Mark Odgers and Alex Jacobs teamed to win the regional doubles
crown. The only time they didn't do so was last year when
Jacobs was studying abroad and Odgers partnered with Jesse
Ferlianto to win the regionals. Odgers-Jacobs, the tournament's
top seed, beat teammates Ramsay and Josh Rubens, who were
the No. 2 seed, 8-6.
The regional winners advance to the
ITA national tournament Oct. 14-17 in Fort Myers, Fla.
(Sept. 25) Three Emory University
players have advanced to the singles semifinals of the Intercollegiate
Tennis Association regional championship. Emory also has three
pairings reach the semifinals in the doubles tournament.
Mark Odgers and Tyson Ramsay, the
tournament's No. 2 and 3 seeds, respectively, advanced in
the singles draw along with unseeded Yoji Masuoka, who upset
the tournament's No. 4 seed.
Emory's top two doubles pairings,
seeded 1-2, advanced to the semifinals, along with an unseeded
pair. No. 1 Odgers and Alex Jacobs advanced along with No.
2 Ramsay and Josh Rubens. The surprise, again, was Masuoka
along with Patrick Redmond, last year's ITA regional singles
champion.
The regional winners advance to the
ITA national tournament Oct. 14-17 in Fort Myers, Fla.
(Sept. 24) Nine Emory University
players advanced to the round of 16 in the Intercollegiate
Tennis Association regional singles championship. Four Emory
pairings made it to the round of eight in the doubles draw.
Newcomer Andrew Watkins pulled off
the upset of the day in the round of 32 in the singles tournament
by knocking off the No. 1 seed, Sebastian Stanescu of Piedmont
(Ga.). Stanescu was 13th in the final ITA national singles
rankings for NCAA Division III last season.
(Sept. 23) Emory University has five
individuals seeded in the top eight in the singles draw and
the top two seeded doubles teams at this year's Intercollegiate
Tennis Association (ITA) regional championships.
The five seeded singles players is an increase from the three
seeded Eagles last year.
Senior and co-captain Mark Odgers
is seeded second in the 64-player draw. This is the third
straight year he has been one of the top two singles seeds.
Fellow co-captains Tyson Ramsay and Alex Jacobs are seeded
third and fifth respectively. Junior Patrick Redmond, last
year's ITA regional singles champion and finished fifth in
the ITA national tournament, is seeded sixth. Senior Josh
Rubens, who lost to Redmond in last year's regional championship
match, is seeded seventh.
Odgers and Jacobs are the top-seeded team entering the doubles
tournament. Odgers teamed up with Jesse Ferlianto last year
to win the regional doubles tournament and place second in
the national tournament. Odgers and Jacobs won the tournament
together in 2002 after entering it as the top seed. Ramsay
and Rubens are the No. 2 seed in this year's doubles tournament.
Emory had four out of the final eight players and three out
of the final four in last year's singles tournament. The ITA
regional championship is hosted by the University of the South
in Sewanee, Tenn from September 24-26. Regional winners advance
to the ITA national tournament Oct. 14-17 in Fort Myers, Fla.
