20th-RANKED EMORY GOLF TEAM EARNS BID TO NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

(May 5) - The No. 20-ranked Emory University golf team has been selected to compete in the 2008 NCAA Division III Golf Championships.  The Eagles are one of 35 teams vying for the team title that will be played May 13-16 at the Chateau Elan Resort in Braselton, Georgia.

Serving as co-hosts of this year’s Division III National Championships will be Emory University and the Gwinnett County Sports Commission.

Emory was one of eight teams selected from Pool B which consists of independent institutions, and institutions that are members of conferences that do not meet the requirements for automatic qualification.  A total of 25 conferences were awarded automatic bids while the final two berths were reserved for Pool C – institutions from automatic qualifying conferences that are not conference champs and any remaining Pool B teams.  In addition, five individuals from non-qualifying teams were chosen to participate bringing the field to 180 players.

The first two days of competition (May 13 & 14) will be played at both the Woodlands Course and Chateau Course.  The field will then be cut to 23 teams and five individuals after the first two rounds.  The final two rounds will be played on the Chateau Course.

Emory will be making its sixth straight NCAA appearance and 13th overall in the 23-year history of the program. Last season, the Eagles posted a 14th-place finish. St. John’s University (MN) captured the team title finishing 12 strokes ahead of runner-up University of LaVerne.

The top seven teams ranked nationally in the Division III ranks will be among those in the hunt for this year’s national crown.  Methodist holds down the No. 1 spot in the Golf World/NIKE Coaches’ Poll while Oglethorpe, St. John’s (MN), Gustavus Adolphus and Huntingdon round out the top five.

(Apr. 15) -- The No. 21-ranked Emory University golf team defended its University Athletic Association title on Tuesday afternoon, recording a resounding 24-stroke win over runner-up Carnegie Mellon. The 36-hole event was played on the 6,927-yard, par-72 Crooked Cat Course at the Orange County National Golf Center in Orlando, Fla.

The Eagles of Head Coach Mike Phillips battled cool and windy conditions during the second day of action and posted a score of 305 to finish with a two-day mark of 591.  The Tartans of Carnegie Mellon came through with through with the best team score of the day with a 302 and finished at 615.  Rounding out the field were New York University (305—314—619), the University of Rochester (305-318—623) and Brandeis University (321-329—650).  Ironically, the Eagles posted the same team score last season at Crooked Cat en route to bringing home the crown.

Juniors Patrick Cohn (69-78—147) and Jeremy Evans (71-76—147), along with sophomore John Ross (72-75—147), all tied for second place in the 25-player field and earned First Team All-UAA honors for their performances. It marked the second straight year that Evans captured first-team acclaim and the first time for both Cohn and Ross.  Senior Drew Harker (74-77—151) tied for seventh place while junior Sean Madgett (80-77—157) tied for 11th position with the pair bringing home Second Team All-UAA recognition. Claiming medalist honors was Ryan Williams of Rochester with a 146 (72-74).

Head Coach Mike Phillips was recognized by his peers by being selected as UAA Coach of the Year for the ninth time.  Since competing at the UAA Championships in 1988, Phillips has led the Eagles to 12 conference titles.

EMORY GOLF TEAM STANDS FIRST AFTER OPENING ROUND OF UAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

(Apr. 14) - The No. 21-ranked Emory University golf team turned in a record-setting day and stands firmly in first place after the opening round of the University Athletic Association Championships.   The 36-hole event is being played on the 6,927-yard, par-72 Crooked Cat Course at the Orange County National Golf Center in Orlando, Fla.

The Eagles of Head Coach Mike Phillips fired a season-low round of two-under par 286 and own a 19-stroke lead over both New York University and the University of Rochester who finished at 305.  Carnegie Mellon (313) and Brandeis (321) round out the field.

Emory’s team score represents the lowest round in UAA Championship play in school history, bettering the previous standard of 291 set during the first round of the 1999 Championship which was played at Smoke Rise Golf and Country Club, and is the second-lowest round ever turned in by any UAA member.  Rochester holds the UAA Championship low round standard with a 282 set in 1989 at the East Course at Norwood Hills in Saint Louis.

Junior Patrick Cohn (St. Louis, MO) leads the 25-player field after concluding the first day with an exceptional showing of three-under 69, tying him with Lee Palms (1969) for the second-lowest individual effort at the UAA Championship in school history. Junior Jeremy Evans (Palm Harbor, FL) was the only other player to break par on Monday, firing a one-under 71.  Sophomore John Ross (N. Barrington, IL) was the next Emory player to place with his even-par performance of 72 tying him with Ryan Williams of Rochester for third place.  Senior Drew Harker posted a 74 and is in a three-way for fifth place. 

Emory will aim to defend its team title and bring home its fifth conference crown in the last seven years on the final day of action on Tuesday.

NO. 21-RANKED EMORY GOLF TEAM EYES UAA CHAMPIONSHIP

(Apr. 12) - The 21st -ranked Emory University golf team returns to action on Monday and Tuesday (Apr. 14-15) when it competes at the 2008 University Athletic Association Championships.  This year’s 36-hole event will be at the Orange County National Golf Center in Orlando, Fla., and played on the Crooked Cat Course.  Crooked Cat is a par 72, 6,748-yard course with a rating of 72.9 and slope of 134.

Emory enters the event as defending champion, finishing 11 strokes ahead of runner-up New York University.  The Eagles paced the five-team field (Emory, NYU, Carnegie Mellon, Rochester and Brandeis) with a score of 591 while NYU checked in at 602.  Jeremy Evans and Sean Madgett were Emory’s top performers, tying for fifth place with scores 148.

This year marks Emory’s 21st trip to the UAA Championships.  In its previous 20 appearances, the Eagles have claimed 11 championships including four in their last six appearances.

In the squad’s last outing, Emory finished fourth out of 15 teams at the Emory Spring Invitational (Apr. 7-8), recording a 36-hole score of 605 (294-311) at the Stonemount Course at Stone Mountain Golf Club.  No. 1-ranked Methodist University defended its Invitational championship with a mark of 582 (292-290). 

EMORY SPRING INVITATIONAL AWAITS EAGLES’ GOLF TEAM

(Apr. 5) - The No. 21-ranked Emory University golf team will host its lone home meet of the season on Monday and Tuesday (Apr. 7-8) when it competes at the Emory Spring Invitational.  The 36-hole tourney will be held at the 6,863-yard, par-70 Stonemount Course at the Stone Mountain Golf Club.

This year’s field is stockpiled with talent with nine teams ranked among the nation’s top 25 teams among the 15 squads competing.  Some of the schools taking part include No. 1-ranked and defending Invitational champ Methodist College. No. 2-ranked Huntingdon College, No. 4 Oglethorpe and No. 7-ranked and last year’s runner-up, Guilford College, round out the top 10 schools taking part in this year’s event.

Last year, the Invitational was conducted at Smoke Rise Golf and Country Club and Emory finished fourth out of 14 teams.  The Eagles’ Jeremy Evans was part of a three-man playoff that Guilford’s Peter Latimer won.

In their most recent outing, the Eagles tied for sixth out of 26 teams at the Jekyll Island Invitational (Mar. 21-23).  Junior Patrick Cohn and senior Drew Harker were the team’s top two competitors with 18th-and 23rd-place finishes, respectively, in the 128-player field.

EMORY MEN'S GOLF TEAM FINISHES TIED FOR SIXTH AT JEKYLL ISLAND INVITATIONAL

(Mar. 23) - The Emory University golf team finished tied for sixth place out of 26 teams at the Jekyll Island Invitational. The 54-hole tournament was played at the 6,521-yard, par-72 Oleander Course on Jekyll Island.

The Eagles recorded a final-day score of 304 and finished the tourney with a team mark of 909.  Taking home first-place team honors was No. 1-ranked Methodist College with a fine effort of 871 (295-285-291). Huntingdon College claimed the runner-up spot, registering an 886 (298-298-290) while Oglethorpe took home third place with an 899 (301-291-307).  Illinois Wesleyan (901) and LaGrange College (906) were fourth and fifth, respectively.  Tying Emory for sixth was St. John Fisher College.

Individually, junior Patrick Cohn finished as Emory’s leader with a final round of 75 leaving him with a score of 225 (77-73-75).  Senior Drew Harker was right behind Cohn with a performance of 226 (74-74-78).  Sophomore John Ross (228) and junior Jeremy Evans (232) rounded out the team’s scorers while freshman David Su finished at 238.

Nick Bova of Methodist College was the medalist with a five-under showing of 211 (71-68-72) while teammate Josh Schrader was second at 215 (75-70-70).

The Eagles return to action on April 7-8 when they host the Emory Invitational at Stone Mountain Golf Course.

EMORY GOLF TEAM EYES JEKYLL ISLAND INVITATIONAL

(Mar. 20) - The No. 21-ranked Emory University golf team continues its spring schedule this Friday through Sunday (Mar. 21-23) when it competes in the Jekyll Island Invitational.  The 54-hole tourney will be held at the 6,521-yard, par-72 Oleander Course on Jekyll Island.

This year’s field will be comprised of approximately 26 teams and over 150 players.  Five of the nation’s top 10 teams will be vying for the team title including No. 1-ranked and defending champion Methodist.  No. 2 Oglethorpe, No. 3 Methodist, No. 6 Rhodes and No. 8 Illinois Wesleyan comprise the rest of the top 10 teams in the field.

Emory representatives will include juniors Jeremy Evans and Patrick Cohn, senior Drew Harker, sophomore John Ross and freshman David Su.

Last year, Emory finished tied for eighth out of 24 teams and was led by Evans who tied for 23rd position in the 132-player field.

In their most recent outing, the Eagles posted an 11th-place finish out of 20 teams at the Rome News-Tribune Invitational (Mar. 10-11).  Evans recorded a 25th-place effort with a five-over par 149.  Cohn tied for 27th place after checking in at 150.

EMORY GOLF TEAM TIED FOR 13th PLACE AFTER FIRST ROUND OF ROME NEWS-TRIBUNE INVTATIONAL

(Mar. 10) - The No. 19-ranked Emory University golf team is tied for 13th place out of 20 teams after the first round of the Rome News-Tribune Invitational. The 36-hole tournament is being played at the 6,835-yard, par-72 Stonebridge Golf Course in Rome.  

The Eagles shot an opening-round team score of 314.  Holding down the No. 1 spot after the opening 18 holes is Lindenwood (MO) at even-par 288.  Northwood University (FL) and Campbellsville are tied for second place at 291 while Newman University down the fourth position with a mark of 293.

Emory Jeremy Evans (Palm Harbor, FL) stands as the Emory leader after the first round, finishing with a three-over par 75.  Junior Patrick Cohn (St. Louis, MO) turned in a solid afternoon and checked in with a 76.  Rounding out the Emory scorers were sophomore John Ross (North Barrington, IL) and freshman David Su (Newport Beach, CA) with performances of 81 and 82, respectively.  Junior Will Gallagher (Wagontown, PA) competed and registered an 83.  Junior Sean Madgett is taking part as an individual player and posted a score of 78.  Three players, Brock Robilliard of Lindenwood, along with Graeme Nelson and Matt Parziale are tied for the No. 1 medalist spot, all at three-under 69.

Action is slated to conclude on Tuesday (Mar. 11).

EMORY GOLF TEAM TO COMPETE AT ROME NEWS-TRIBUNE INVITATIONAL

(Mar. 7) - The No. 19-ranked Emory University golf team stays within the state boundary next Monday and Tuesday  (Mar. 10-11) when it takes part in the Rome News-Tribune Invitational.  The 36-hole tournament will be played at the 6,835-yard, par-72 Stonebridge Golf Course in Rome.  

This year’s field will be comprised of 22 teams and over 100 players.  Serving as the host of the Invitational will be Berry College, the No. 8-ranked team in NAIA.  Other ranked NAIA teams competing include No. 9 Lindewood and No. 12 Campbellsville University.  Lee University enters the competition as the defending champion. Also looking to take home the title is LaGrange College, ranked 18th among Division III teams.

In its most recent outing, Emory recorded a sixth-place finish out of 16 teams at the Callaway Gardens Collegiate (Mar. 3-4).  Emory sophomore John Ross (N. Barrington, IL) and junior Jeremy Evans (Palm City, FL) were the top performers for the Eagles, both shooting seven-over par 151 that tied them for seventh place in the 83-player field. 

EMORY GOLF TEAM POSTS SIXTH-PLACE FINISH AT CALLAWAY GARDENS COLLEGIATE

Final Results
(Mar. 4) - The No. 19-ranked Emory University golf team recorded a sixth-place finish out of 16 teams at the Callaway Gardens Collegiate. The 36-hole event was played at the 7,057-yard, par-72 Mountain Course at Callaway Gardens Resort in Pine Mountain, Georgia.

The Eagles shot a second-day score of  310 and finished with a 36-hole total of 618. No. 2-ranked Methodist captured the team championship, coming in with a solid 288 during Tuesday’s round to close at 597.  Darton Community College took home runner-up honors with an effort of 607 (311-296) while first-round leader UT-Tyler went home in third place with a 609 (301-308).  LaGrange College and Rhodes College tied for the fourth spot with marks of 612.

Emory sophomore John Ross (N. Barrington, IL) and junior Jeremy Evans (Palm City, FL) were the top performers for the Eagles, both shooting seven-over par 151 that tied them for seventh place in the 83-player field.  After checking in with a first-round score of 73, Ross registered a 78 on Tuesday while Evans registered scores of 77-74. Junior Patrick Cohn (St. Louis, MO) tied for 26th position with a showing of 155 (75-80) and sophomore Shane Miller (Irwin, PA) rounded out the team’s scorers with a 162 (83-79).  Junior Sean Madgett (Sammamish, WA) competed and turned in a performance of 163 (84-79).

Matt Bova of Methodist captured medalist honors as he topped Ryan Jennings of UT-Tyler in a playoff.  The pair each finished with a 145.

Emory returns to action next Monday and Tuesday (Mar. 10-11) when it competes at the Rome-News Tribune Invitational at the Stonebridge Golf Club in Rome, Ga.

EMORY GOLF TEAM STANDS SECOND AFTER FIRST ROUND OF CALLAWAY GARDENS COLLEGIATE

(Mar. 3) - The No. 19-ranked Emory University golf team stands second out of 16 teams after the first round of the Callaway Gardens Collegiate. The 36-hole event is being played at the 7,057-yard, par-72 Mountain Course at Callaway Gardens Resort in Pine Mountain, Georgia.

The Eagles shot an opening-round team score of 308.  Holding down the No. 1 spot after the opening 18 holes is UT-Tyler at 301.  Methodist (310), Darton Community College (311), Texas Lutheran (313) and LaGrange College (313) round out the top five teams.

Emory sophomore John Ross (N. Barrington, IL) battled through the windy conditions to post a one-over par 73, good for a first-place tie with Matt Bova of Methodist and A.J. Vesey of Texas Lutheran.  Juniors Patrick Cohn (St. Louis, MO) and Jeremy Evans (Palm Harbor, FL) were the next two Eagles on the board, finishing with scores of 75 and 77, respectively.  Sophomore Shane Miller (Irwin, PA) checked in at 83 while junior Sean Madgett (Sammamish, WI) finished the day with an 84.

Action is slated to conclude on Tuesday (Mar. 4).

EMORY GOLF TEAM TO COMPETE AT CALLAWAY GARDENS COLLEGIATE

(Mar. 2) - The No. 19-ranked Emory University golf team continues its spring season on Monday and Tuesday (Mar. 3-4) when it takes part in the Callaway Gardens Collegiate.  The 36-hole tournament will be played on the famous Mountain Course at Callaway Gardens Resort in Pine Mountain, Georgia.

This year’s talent-filled field will be comprised of 16 teams and approximately 85 players.  Ten of the nation’s top 25 teams, including the top three clubs, will be looking to bring home the team title including No. 1-ranked Oglethorpe College.  Other top teams taking part include No. 2 Methodist, No. 3 Huntingdon and No. 6 Rhodes. Last season, the Eagles of Head Coach Mike Phillips tied for seventh out of 16 teams.  Emory’s top returning finisher from last year was Jeremy Evans who tied for 18th out of 87 contestants.

Emory opened it spring campaign with a fourth-place finish out of 10 teams at the Pine Needles Intercollegiate (Feb. 25-26).  The Eagles’ top performer was junior Patrick Cohn who tied for the ninth position out of 55 players with a six-over par 148 (72-76).  Evans tied for 12th with a seven-over 149 (76-73).

Final Results

(Feb. 26) – The No. 19-ranked Emory University men’s golf team concluded its spring season-opening competition with a fourth-place finish out of 10 teams at the Pine Needles Intercollegiate.  The 36-hole event was played at the 7,015-yard, par-71 Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club, in Southern Pines, North Carolina.  The Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club served as the venue for the 1996, 2001 and 2007 U.S. Women’s Open.

Capturing first-place honors was Belmont Abbey who shot second-day score of 291 to put at 591.  Guilford College claimed runner-up honors at 601 while Cape Fear Community College was third with an effort of 604.  Emory finished with a two-day score of 608 (301-307).

Junior Patrick Cohn was Emory’s top performer with a score of six-over par 148 (72-76), good for a tie for ninth place in the 55-player field.  Junior Jeremy Evans shot the squad’s best round of the day with a 73 that left him at 149, good for a 15th-place tie. Sophomore Shane Miller turned in a 153 (78-75) while senior Drew Harker rounded out the team’s scorers at 158 (75-83).  After finishing with an opening round 78, junior Brent Josephson withdrew for medical reasons.

Emory continues its spring season next Monday and Tuesday (Mar. 3-4) when it competes at the Callaway Gardens Collegiate in Pine Mountain.

EMORY MEN'S GOLF TEAM FOURTH AFTER OPENING ROUND OF PINE NEEDLES INTERCOLLEGIATE

(Feb. 25) – The No. 19-ranked Emory University men’s golf team stands fourth out of 10 teams after the opening round of the Pine Needles Intercollegiate.  The 36-hole event is being played at the 7,015-yard, par-71 Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club, in Southern Pines, North Carolina.  The Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club served as the venue for the 1996, 2001 and 2007 U.S. Women’s Open.

The Eagles fired an opening-day team score of 301 and trail co-leaders Wesley College and Averett University, both at 298. Belmont Abbey holds down third place (300) while Hampden-Sydney College rounds out the top five at 304. 

Junior Patrick Cohn paced the Emory contingent with a one-over par 72, good for a third-place tie in the 56-player field.   Senior Drew Harker was the next Emory player on the board with a 75, tying him for 16th position.  Junior Jeremy Evans finished the day in a tie for 24th place with a 76 while junior Brent Josephson and sophomore Shane Miller each checked in with a 78. The individual leader after the first round is Will Scarborough of Wesley College with a score of two-under 69.

The final round will be held on Tuesday (Feb. 26).

EMORY GOLF TEAM OPENS SPRING SCHEDULE AT PINE NEEDLES INTERCOLLEGIATE

(Feb. 23) - The No. 19-ranked Emory University men’s golf team opens the spring portion of its schedule on Monday and Tuesday (Feb. 25-26) when it competes at the Pine Needles Intercollegiate.  The 36-hole event will be played at the 7,015-yard, par-71 Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club, in Southern Pines, North Carolina.  The Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club served as the venue for the 1996, 2001 and 2007 U.S. Women’s Open.

Host Guilford College, ranked No. 7 among Division squads and Emory headline the 11-team field.  Some of the other teams competing include Averett, Belmont Abbey, Greensboro, Hampden-Sydney, Wesley and Wingate.

Head Coach Mike Phillips and his team took part in four competitions during the fall with the best effort being a fourth-place finish out of 18 teams at the O’Briant Memorial (Oct. 8-9) in Greensboro.

Individually, junior Jeremy Evans competed in all four events posted a team-best 74.4 per-round average.  Evans fired three round of par or better and his best finish was a second-place performance out of 86 players at the O’Briant Memorial.  Other Emory players competing in the spring opener included senior Drew Harker, juniors Brent Josephson and Patrick Cohn and sophomore Shane Miller.

EMORY GOLF TEAM CONCLUDES PLAY AT OGLETHORPE INVITATIONAL

(Oct. 23) -- The No. 15-ranked Emory University golf team finished in a ninth-place tie out of 12 teams at the Oglethorpe Fall Invitational.  The 36-hole event was played at the 6,830-yard, par-71 Royal Lakes Golf Course in nearby Flowery Branch.

The Eagles shot a second-round team score of 306 to finish the tourney at 607.  Guilford College used an outstanding 278 on the final day to bring home the crown with a two-over score of 570.  Oglethorpe was runner-up with an effort of 572 (285-287) while Methodist (286-296) claimed third place.  Huntingdon (296-287—583) and LaGrange College (293-299—592) rounded out the top five.

Emory junior Jeremy Evans (Palm Harbor, FL) led the Eagles with a four-over 146 (69-77), that tied him for 12th place in the 63-player field.  Freshman David Su (Newport Beach, CA) ranked second among the Eagles’ contingent with a 153 (76-77), tying him for 39th place. Rounding out the team’s scorers were senior Drew Harker (79-77—154), and juniors Brent Josephson (81-75—156) and Sean Madgett (79-81—160).  Competing as individuals were freshman Daniel Kmetz (Louisville, KY), who tied for 30th place at eight-over 150 (78-72), and sophomore Shane Miller (81-81—162).

The Oglethorpe Fall Invitational represented the Eagles’ final action for the fall.

(Oct. 22) - The No. 15-ranked Emory University golf team stands seventh out of 12 teams after the first day of competition at the Oglethorpe Fall Invitational.  The 36-hole event is being played at the 6,830-yard, par-71 Royal Lakes Golf Course in nearby Flowery Branch.

The Eagles shot an opening-round team score of 301.  Holding down the No. 1 spot is Oglethorpe at 285 while Methodist is in hot pursuit with a mark of 286.  Washington & Lee ranks third at 290 while Guilford College (292) and LaGrange (293) round out the top five.

The wet conditions delayed the start of competition but didn’t bother Emory junior Jeremy Evans (Palm Harbor, FL) who led the Eagles with a two-under 69, good for second place in the 63-player field.  Freshman David Su (Newport Beach, CA) is the next Emory player to appear on the scoreboard after finishing with a round of 76, good for a 32nd-place tie.  Other Eagles’ scorers included senior Drew Harker (77) and juniors Sean Madgett (79) and Brent Josephson (81).  Freshman Daniel Kmetz (78) and sophomore Shane Miller (81) competed as individuals.

Action concludes on Tuesday and will close out Emory’s fall schedule.

EMORY GOLF TEAM CLOSES OUT FALL SCHEDULE AT OGLETHORPE INVITATIONAL

(Oct. 19) -- The No. 15-ranked Emory University men’s golf team closes out the fall portion of its 2007-08 schedule on Monday and Tuesday of next week (Oct 22-23) when it competes at the Oglethorpe Invitational.  The 36-hole event will be played at the 6,835-yard, par-71 Royal Lakes Golf Course in nearby Flowery Branch.

This year’s 12-team field includes a number of elite Division III squads including four of the top five-ranked teams – No. 1 Methodist, No. 2 Oglethorpe, No. 3 Guilford and No. 5 Huntingdon.  Methodist captured the top spot last year, recording a five-stroke victory over Oglethorpe.  Emory finished the tourney in fifth place but claimed the top three individuals.  The graduated Rod Olivero took home medalist honors shooting a two-under 140 while junior Jeremy Evans (Palm Harbor, FL) finished runner-up with an even-par 142 (72-70).  Junior Brent Josephson (Hidden Hills, CA), playing as an individual, finished third with a 143 (72-71).

In their most recent performance, the Eagles tied for fourth out of 18 teams at the O’Briant Memorial (Oct. 8-9) held in Greensboro, NC. Evans led the Emory contingent with a two-under 140 (70-70), good for second place overall out of 86 players. 

EMORY’S JEREMY EVANS NAMED UAA GOLFER OF THE WEEK

(Oct. 16) - Emory University junior Jeremy Evans (Palm Harbor, FL) has been named the University Athletic Association Golfer of the Week following his performance at the Tom & Bettie O’Briant Memorial, played Oct. 8-9 in Greensboro, NC. It marks the fourth time in his career that he has been selected for the honor.

Evans helped the Eagles to a fourth-place tie out of 18 teams at the tournament, pacing the squad and finishing second overall out of 87 players with a two-round score of two-under 140 (70-70). Evans trailed only medalist Nathaniel James of Washington and Lee who posted a 135.  Jeremy's performance was further noteworthy because it tied him for third place on Emory's all-time list for the lowest 36-hole score.

The Emory golf team will close out the fall portion of its schedule when it competes at the Oglethorpe Invitational, Oct. 22-23, at the Royal Lakes Golf Club in Flowery Branch.

EMORY GOLF TEAM FINISHES TIED FOR FOURTH AT O’BRIANT MEMORIAL

The No. 11-ranked Emory University golf team moved up the leader board during the final day of competition at the Tom & Bettie O’Briant Memorial Tournament and ended the 36-hole event tied for fourth place out of 18 teams. This year’s tournament was played at the Greensboro Country Club Carlson Farm Course

The Eagles shot a second-round score of 294 to finish with a 594.  Oglethorpe took home first place with a 579 while the UNC Chapel Hill B Team posted a runner-up finish with a mark of 586.  Methodist came in third at 590.  Joining Emory at 594 were Washington & Lee University, Hampden-Sydney College and the UNC Greensboro B Team.

Junior Jeremy Evans (Palm Harbor, FL) came through with another solid effort for the Eagles, recording his second consecutive round of 70 to finish at two-under 140, good for second place in the 86-player field.  Claiming medalist honors was Nathaniel James of Washington & Lee who compiled a 67 to finish at seven-under 135. 

Emory sophomore John Ross (N. Barrington, IL) was the next Eagle to rank on the scoreboard with a nine-over 151 (74-77), good for a 32nd-place tie, while junior Sean Madgett (Sammamish, WA) finished at 152 (76-76).  Freshman David Su (Newport Beach, CA) bounced back nicely from his opening round of 82 to post an even-par 71 to close out at 153.  Senior Drew Harker (Barrington, RI) shot a 158 over the two days of action.

Emory’s next action takes place Oct. 22-23 when it plays in the Oglethorpe Fall Invitational in Flowery Branch.

EMORY GOLF TEAM NINTH AFTER FIRST ROUND OF O’BRIANT MEMORIAL

(Oct. 8) - The No. 11-ranked Emory University golf team stands ninth out of 18 teams after the first day of competition at the Tom & Bettie O’Briant Memorial Tournament.   This year’s 36-hole event is being played at the Greensboro Country Club Carlson Farm Course.

The Eagles posted a team score of 300 and are just two shots out of fifth place.  Oglethorpe University and Washington & Lee University are deadlocked for the top spot after each squad posted a four-over par 288.  Four-time defending champion Methodist is one shot off the lead at 289 while the UNC Chapel Hill B Team (293) stands in fourth position.  There is a three-way tie for fifth place with Wesley College, Randolph-Macon College and Hampden-Sydney College all checking in at 298.

Junior Jeremy Evans (Palm Harbor, FL) had the hot hand for the Eagles today, shooting a one-under 70, good for sole possession of fourth place.  Leading the 87-player field are Nathaniel James of Washington & Lee and Ryan Holler of the UNC B squad, both of whom finished at 68.  Jake Pleczkowski of Methodist holds down the No. 3 post at 69.

Emory sophomore John Ross (N. Barrington, IL) was the next Eagle to rank on the scoreboard with a three-over 74, good for 19th place.  Junior Sean Madgett (Sammamish, WA) and senior Drew Harker (Barrington, RI) rounded out Emory scorers with 76 and 80, respectively.   Freshman David Su (Newport Beach, CA), playing in his first tournament, totaled an 82. 

This year’s tournament features six of NCAA Division III’s top-25 teams, according to the Sept. 19 GolfWorld/NIKE Golf Coaches Poll.

Action will conclude on Tuesday.

EMORY GOLF TEAM TO COMPETE AT O’BRIANT MEMORIAL

(Oct. 5) -- The No. 11-ranked Emory University men’s golf team returns to the state of North Carolina when it competes in the 20th annual Tom and Bettie O’Briant Memorial on Oct. 8-9.  The tournament, hosted by Guilford College, will be held at the Greensboro Country Club Farm Course in Greensboro.  The course, designed by Pete Dye, is 6,942 yards with the par being 71. 

This year’s field includes nationally ranked teams Methodist (No. 2), Oglethorpe (No. 3) and host Guilford (No. 4).   All totaled, 18 squads are slated to take part in the 36-hole tournament that Methodist has captured the last four years. Last season, Emory tied for fifth out of 17 teams.    

In their most recent performance, the Eagles tied for sixth out of 18 teams at the Greensboro College Invitational (Oct. 1-2).  Emory recorded a 36-hole effort of 614 and was just one stroke shy of tying for fifth position.  Senior Drew Harker (Barrington, RI) led Emory for the second straight tournament, tying for 23rd place in the 88-player field with a score of 153 (76-77).  Juniors Jeremy Evans (Palm Harbor, FL) and Sean Madgett (Sammamish, WA) were close behind at 154, placing them in a tie for 27th place. Rounding out the team’s scorers was junior Patrick Cohn (St. Louis, MO) with a 155 (76-79).

EMORY GOLF TEAM GEARS UP FOR GREENSBORO COLLEGE INVITATIONAL

(Sept. 27) -- The No. 11-ranked Emory University men’s golf team continues the fall portion of its schedule this coming Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 1-2) when it competes at the Greensboro College Invitational.  The 36-hole tourney will be played at the 7,135-yards, par-72 Champions Course at the Bryan Park Golf Course. 

This year’s field includes four teams that are ranked among the top 10 NCAA Division III teams in the nation including Methodist (No. 2), Oglethorpe (No. 3), Guilford (No. 4) and Huntingdon (No. 6).  All totaled, 18 squads are slated to take part in the event that has Huntingdon as the defending champion  Last year, Emory posted a sixth-place finish out of 15 teams.   Jeremy Evans paced the Eagles’ effort with a second-place finish out of 81 players. 

Emory opened its season, Sept 23-24, by recording a sixth-place finish out of 13 teams at the Rhodes College Fall Invitational. Senior Drew Harker was Emory’s top performer with a two-round effort of five-over par 149 (73-76), good for an 11th-place tie in the 68-player field.

“We have not played Bryan Park in years and I understand that they have re-done a number of holes and lengthened the course,” Emory Head Coach Mike Phillips said.  “It is one of the top public courses around and its length requires lots of drivers off the tees.  It is a nice venue and, with the excellent competition taking part, it should be a good tournament.”

EMORY GOLF TEAM CLOSES OUT RHODES INVITATIONAL WITH SIXTH-PLACE FINISH

The No. 11-ranked Emory University golf team finished sixth out of 13 teams at the Rhodes College Fall Invitational.  The 36-hole tourney was held at the 7,204-yards, par-72 Tunica (MS) National Golf Resort.

Emory posted a final-round team score of 309 to finish the event with a 609.  Huntingdon College captured first place with a 584 (293-291) while Rhodes College claimed the runner-up spot with a 589 (298-291).  Rounding out the top five were Oglethorpe (301-296--597), Texas Lutheran (306-296--602) and McMurry University (309-297--606).

Senior Drew Harker (Barrington, RI) led the Emory contingent, concluding the second round with a four-over par 76 to finish at 149, good for an 11th-place tie in the 68-player field.  Junior Sean Madgett ((Sammamish, WA) posted his second consecutive 76 and registered a 152 for his efforts, good for a 22nd-place tie.  Junior Brent Josephson (Hidden Hills, CA) deadlocked for 28th place with a 153 (75-78) while junior Jeremy Evans (76-79—155) and sophomore Raffi Simmel (76-82—158) tied for 33rd and 37th, respectively.

Freshman Daniel Kmetz (Louisville, KY) competed as an individual and fired a second-round 75 enabling him to post a two-round total of 154, tying for 30th place. 

Emory continues the fall portion of its schedule, Oct. 1-2, when it competes at the Greensboro College Invitational.

EMORY GOLF TEAM STANDS THIRD AFTER FIRST ROUND OF RHODES COLLEGE INVITATIONAL

(Sept. 23) -- The No. 11-ranked Emory University golf team held down third place after the opening round of the Rhodes College Fall Invitational.  The 36-hole tourney is being held at the 7,155-yards, par-72 Tunica (MS) National Golf Resort.

Emory posted a team score of 300 and trailed Huntingdon (293) and Rhodes (300).  Rounding out the top five teams were Oglethorpe (301) and Texas Lutheran (306).  There are 13 teams competing in this year’s event.

Senior Drew Harker (Barrington, RI) found himself in second place out of 69 players after posting a one-over par 73.  Junior Brent Josephson (Hidden Hills, CA) held down the 11th spot after coming up with a three-over par 75.  Juniors Jeremy Evans (Palm Harbor, FL) and Sean Madgett (Sammamish, WA), along with sophomore Raffi Simel (Greensboro, NC) were tied for 19th after finishing with 76.

The final round was scheduled to be completed on Monday.
