Emory University finished second
at the NCAA Division III national championships for the
second straight season, tying the best finish in school
history. It was the sixth consecutive year that Emory finished
in the top three at the national championships.
Emory earned the title of national
champion in two events. Senior Chris Halstead defended his
title in the 200-yard backstroke becoming the second Eagle
to repeat as a national champion. Emory also earned its
first national championship for a relay event in the 200-yard
medley relay.
The Eagles finished with a school
record five national champion certificates (one individual,
four relay) and 33 All-America certificates (13 individual,
20 relay). There were a total of 12 individuals earning
All-America honors. Emory had 18 qualifiers for the national
championships giving them the largest squad in the competition.
Emory University extended its streak
of University Athletic Association conference titles to
seven consecutive years. Individual honors included:

Brandon Burke
Burke, a junior, earned All-America honors for the third
consecutive year. This season he earned three All-America
certificates--200-yard backstroke and the 200- and 400-yard
individual medleys. He finished third in the 200-back and
seventh and eighth in the 400 and 200 IM, respectively.
Burke's time in the 400 IM at the University of Georgia
Fall Invitational was the fastest on the team this season.
Burke currently holds the fastest two times in school history
for this event. Burke finished 11th out of 40 competitors
on the team this season in points scored at dual and championship
meets.
Andrew Callam
Callam, a sophomore, earned All-America honors for the second
consecutive season. This season he earned three All-American
certificates--400-yard medley relay and as a member of the
200- and 400-yard freestyle relays. Callam also earned an
All-Conference certificate this year as a member of the
400-free relay team. Callam finished seventh out of 40 competitors
in points scored in dual and championship meets this season.
Justin Hake
Hake, a junior, earned a national championship honor this
season by swimming a leg on the 200-yard medley relay team,
the first relay team in school history to win a national
championship. Hake earned five All-America certificates
this year placing him third all-time at Emory with 13 for
his career. He earned an All-America certificate by placing
fourth in the 100-yard butterfly. Hake also earned All-America
honors in four relay events (200-free, 400-free, 200-medley,
and 400-medley). Hake time in the 100-yard fly at the University
of Georgia Fall Invitational was the fastest on the team
this season for that event. He currently holds the top four
fastest times for this event in school history. Hake was
third on the team of 40 competitors in points scored in
dual and championship meets.
Chris Halstead
Halstead, a senior, earned his second straight national
championship in the 200-yard backstroke. Halstead also earned
a national championship as a member of the 200-yard medley
relay team. Halstead earned, a school record, six All-America
certificates this year. Halstead finished second in the
200-yard individual medley and third in the 100-back and
earned two more All-America honors as a member of the 800-yard
freestyle and the 400-yard medley relay teams. Halstead
is now second all-time at Emory with 14 career All-America
certificates. Halstead also earned four all-conference honors
this season. He earned two by winning the 100- and 200-yard
backstroke and two others in relay events at the conference
championships. Halstead currently holds the 10 fastest times
in school history for the 200-yard backstroke. Halstead
finished the season in first place among 40 competitors
on the team in points scored in dual and championship meets.
Michael Klein
Klein, a junior, earned his first All-America honor this
season by finishing fifth in the three-meter diving competition
at the NCAA Division III national championships. His score
of 443. is the 13th best score in Emory history. This is
the third consecutive year that Klein has qualified for
the national championships. Klein was named Male Diver of
the Year in the University Athletic Association this year,
becoming only the third diver in Emory history earn this
title. Klein finished first in both diving events at the
UAA conference championships, becoming only the second diver
at Emory to win both events in a single championship.
Nick Lake
Lake, a freshman, earned his first All-America certificate
this season by finishing eighth in the 1650-yard freestyle
at the NCAA Division III national championships. Lake's
time at the University of Georgia Fall Invitational in this
event was the fastest on the team this season. Lake currently
holds the 12th fastest time in school history in the 1650
free. Lake finished 17th on the team of 40 competitors in
points scored in dual and championship meets.
Jimmy McGee
McGee, a senior, garnered his third consecutive qualification
for the NCAA Division III national championships this season.
He acquired two All-America certificates as a member of
the 200- and 400-yard freestyle relay teams. McGee also
earned five all-conference honors this season. McGee ends
his career at Emory with four All-America certificates along
with eight all-conference honors. McGee was ninth out of
40 competitors this season in points scored in dual and
championship meets.
Stefan Mianowski
Mianowski, a freshman, won his first national championships
as a member of the 200-yard medley relay team. Mianowski
becomes the first freshman in school history to achieve
a national title. Mianowski earned two All-America honors
this season in the 200- and 400-yard medley relays. Mianowski
also gained four all-conference honors. His time in the
200-yard breaststroke at the University Athletic Association
championships earned him a second-place finish and gave
him the fastest time in that event this season among Emory
swimmers. Mianowski finished second on the team of 40 competitors
in points scored in dual and championship meets.
Tim Newton
Newton, a sophomore, qualified for the NCAA Division III
national championships for the second consecutive season.
This year Newton acquired three All-America certificates.
Newton finished third in the 500-yard freestyle and sixth
in the 400-yard individual medley. He also swam a leg on
the 800-yard freestyle relay team which finished sixth.
Newton holds the fifth-fastest time in school history in
the 500 free. Newton currently has five career All-America
certificates. Newton finished 13th on the team of 40 competitors
this season in points scored in dual and championship meets.
Chris Press
Press, a senior, acquired his first national championship
honor as a member of the 200-yard medley relay team. Press
achieved four All-America certificates this season. His
other three All-America honors came in the 200-, 400-, and
800-yard freestyle relays. Press ends his career at Emory
with a total of 12 All-America certificates, the fourth
highest in Emory history. Press's time in the 50-yard freestyle
at the University of Georgia Fall Invitational was the fastest
on the team in that event this season. Press graduates with
the fastest time in school history in the 50 free and the
third-fastest time in the 100 free. Press was fourth among
40 competitors on the team this season in points scored
in dual and championship meets.
John Sutter
Sutter, a senior, earned two All-America certificates this
season. At the NCAA Division III national championships,
Sutter finished fifth in the one-meter diving competition
and seventh in the third-meter diving competition. Sutter
is the third diver in Emory history to earn an All-America
certificate and only the second diver in school history
to earn All-America certificates in both events at the same
championship. This is the second straight year that Sutter
has participated in the NCAA championships. Sutter earned
two all-conference honors this season in these same two
events. Sutter finished second and third, respectively,
in the one-meter and three-meter diving competitions at
the conference meet. Sutter finished 14th out of 40 competitors
on the team in points scored in dual and championship meets
this season.
Dan Weissman
Weissman, a senior, earned an All-America certificate in
the 800-yard freestyle relay. Weissman ends his career at
Emory with seven career All-America certificates. This makes
the fourth straight season that Weissman qualified for the
national championships. Weissman earned three all-conference
honors this season, including a first-place finish in the
1650-yard freestyle. Weissman holds the school record in
the 500-yard freestyle. Weissman was eighth out of 40 competitors
on the team this season in points scored in dual and championship
meets.
