2005-06
The Emory men’s Swimming and Diving Team put together a memorable season, punctuated by a third place finish at the NCAA Division III National Championships. Along the way, the Eagles boasted two individual national champions, a slew of new school records and a conference record eighth consecutive University Athletic Association (UAA) titles. The Eagles have now finished in the top-three at nationals for the seventh straight year, all under head coach Jon Howell. Emory had 18 qualifiers for the national championship meet, the most in the nation.
Senior Justin Hake ended his college career with a splash, swimming to the national championship in the 100-yard butterfly in a school record 48.15 seconds. He added a fourth place finish in the 200-yard butterfly in 1:51.24. In total, Hake won an Emory record 17 All-America honors. He graduated as the Emory record holder in the 100-yard butterfly, as well as a member of the school record 200-yard freestyle relay, 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard medley relay. He set an example out of the water as well, winning a prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.
Emory distance swimmers Tim Newton and Nick Lake enjoyed banner seasons. Newton, a junior, was the national champion in the 500-yard freestyle, winning in an Emory record 4:26.00, while Lake, a sophomore, finished sixth in the same race. Newton placed third in the 400-yard individual medley with another school record time of 3:58.83, and again, Lake was close behind, in sixth overall. In the 1,650-yard freestyle, it was Lake’s turn to shine, and he set a new Emory record en route to a fifth place finish 15:41.60, with Newton placing 16th. Freshman Randall Scarborough proved that the future will remain bright in the distance ranks, winning the UAA title in the 500-yard freestyle and eventually placing 13th in the event at NCAAs. Newton, Lake and Scarborough teamed with sophomore Cary Burke for a fifth place performance at nationals – and another school record – in the 800-yard freestyle relay (6:48.55).
Eagle backstrokers also enjoyed a strong presence on the national scene. Senior Brandon Burke was named to the All-America team for the fourth consecutive year, finishing seventh in the 200-yard backstroke, after winning the UAA title in the event. Junior Alex Fleet finished eighth, while sophomore Steve Inacker (12th place), and junior brothers Thomas Roos (15th), and Andrew Roos (16th), also collected points in the event.
Inacker, the UAA champion for the 100-yard backstroke, then teamed with Hake, junior freestyler Andrew Callam, and UAA 200-yard breaststroke champ, freshman Scott Bobo to take home fifth place in the 200-yard medley relay.
Hake, Innacker, Callam and C. Burke also united for Emory’s school record performance (1:22.47) in the 200-yard freestyle relay, which garnered fourth place in the nation.
On the heels of his diving victories in both the one- and three-meter boards, Senior Michael Klein was named UAA Diver of the Year for the second time. Additionally, he qualified for nationals for the fourth straight year, where he finished in ninth place in the three-meter diving.
Throughout the winter, the Eagles built a 6-3 record in dual meets against opponents from all levels of NCAA competition, defeating Davidson (Division I), Rollins, and Tampa (Division II), while performing admirably in losses to Georgia Tech and Georgia (Division I). In addition, the team placed first of four teams at the Carnegie Mellon (Pa.) Invitational and second of 10 teams at the Miami (Ohio) Invitational.
With a team grade point average of 3.39 for the semester, Emory was named by the College Swim Coaches Association of America as an Academic All-America Team.
