(Apr. 27) –  The No. 7-ranked Emory University men’s team captured the program’s 19th consecutive University Athletic Association Championship Sunday afternoon with a victory over No. 2-ranked Washington University.  The Eagles prevailed by a 6-2 margin and in the process brought home its 20th UAA title in the 21 years that the championship has been held.  Sunday’s title match was held at the WoodPec Indoor Courts on the Emory campus.

Emory got out of the blocks quickly and impressively, winning all three doubles matches.  The Eagles’ No. 2 duo of junior Mark Boren and senior Hardy Ehlers were dominant as they posted an 8-1 verdict over the Bears’ tandem of John Watts and Trevis Bowman.  Sophomore Oliver Lopp and junior Michael Kaufman provided Emory with a solid performance at No. 3 doubles with an 8-4 win against Isaac Stein and Max Woods.  Emory went up, 3-0, in the match after the No. 1 team of junior Michael Goodwin and sophomore David Caplan posted a thrilling 9-7 win over Charlie Cutler and Chris Hoeland in what was the best doubles match of the championship.  With the contest tied at 7-7, the Emory pair broke WU’s serve to go up, 8-7, and then held serve to capture the match.

Danny Levy got the first point of the match for the Bears when he bested David Caplan, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 3 singles.  Goodwin then turned in an inspirational performance at No. 1 singles, coming from behind and battling cramps late in the match before notching a 3-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 victory over John Watts, the nation’s No. 1-ranked singles player in Division III.  Goodwin’s effort kept Emory three points ahead, 4-1, before the Bears narrowed the gap to 4-2 following a 6-3, 6-2 triumph by Chris Hoeland at No. 5 singles. Mark Boren would clinch the match for Emory as he got the better of Cutler in a slugfest at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.  Oliver Lopp playing at No. 4 singles, finished his match moments later with a hard-fought 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 outcome against Max Woods.

In the battle for third place, Carnegie Mellon notched a 5-2 decision over the University of Chicago.
